gene's pov

i watch as she gets up. it's time to go home and i'm even more concerned now that we can go home. she's not allowed to go back to work until monday. i help her as much as possible before she yells at me.

"gene i'm fine you don't need to help me walk!" she says annoyed.

"sorry i'm just worried the snake did bite your leg. it's fine just please let me help you." i say pleading as much as my dignity will allow.

after rolling her eyes she responds "fine you stubborn butt" she says while giggling. such a weird cutie. i help her to the car and drive home. "dad's coming over for dinner. he texted me in the hospital and he's bringing potato boats."

"potato whats?" i ask confused on the name of whatever we're supposedly eating.

"potato boats. you'll like them." is the only explanation i get.

y/n's pov

i hear a knock and open the door. gene makes me use at least a walking stick/cane. once i open it i see dad and jessica. no twins which i don't really mind. "come in" i say sweetly and let them in."

"thank you for letting us come over." jessica says her voice obviously full of fake concern.

"of course." i reply and we go into the living room talking about boring adult stuff. i know i shouldn't change the topic unless i want my ear ran off with jessica talking about disrespect. we finally decide to eat and gene looks skeptical on the taste.

i giggles and begin eating and everyone soon follows suit. i notice that jessica is holding back her disgust and that gene actually like it. i'm not too shocked on jessica's reaction. i mean she is a fancy to good for you snob. but she apparently loves my dad so i tolerate her.

"so y/n....." jessica begins and i know she's actually deep in thought about something for once.

"yes?"

"when are you and gene finally getting married?" she asks out of NOWHERE. i choke slightly on the potatoes while gene coughs on his water. "what?" she asks as though it was the most normal question ever.

"jessica i don't think we're ready just yet for that. i mean weddings cost lots of money and people can go into debt from them. we're not financially stable." i say trying to think of a good excuse. yes gene and i have talked about getting married but always laughed it off as though it would never happen.

"well do you guys love each other enough to stay with one another for the rest of your life?" my dad ask and we both nod. i tried taking a small break from gene and the next day i was crying alone and sad beyond compare. "then have you thought about it?"

"well of course but like i said we're not fi-"

"are you saving?" jessica asks.

"well sorta. we have a swear jar and a spare change jar for random money we find around the place and then once they're full we transfer them somewhere else but we don't have enough money yet." i explain.

"then we'll help you." my dad says and almost choke once again.

"dad no really it's fine. we actually don't mind not being married. we like it this way. please don't help us. it'll feel even better when we finally get enough money." i try reasoning.

"technically we're engaged but just waiting for the money to be settles." gene says and my face flushes.

"where's the ring?" jessica questions.

"we don't have an engagement ring." gene says and i stand up quickly.

"i think dinner is finished." i say in a hurry to escape the conversation.
