Chapter Three

The next two weeks were hard.

Early in the first week, Fitz's heart stopped and he would've been dead if the W.R.E.N. (Working Robot Emergency Notifier) wasn't working. It had woken up Gillian, who used the AED. Simmons had a W.R.E.N. she wore on her wrist at all times as well.

She sobbed all night and into the next day sitting next to him. She had almost lost him, and she couldn't bear to think of life without her other half.

The next week was hard on everybody, because Fitz was on strict supervision by Dr.Elms. She only allowed 'family-with an exception of Jemma, a close family friend' in the room.

Simmons stayed in his room almost all of the time, reading books that Gillian supplied.

Days passed, and Jemma either stayed in her room or Fitz's. No one came to talk to her, which she wasn't upset at. She didn't feel like talking much anyways.

It was an early morning, and Simmons was laying in bed reading An Abundance Of Katherines, yet another book of Gillian's.

She felt a strong vibration on her wrist, and looked down to see that her W.R.E.N. had lit up. Simmons felt her heart drop.

Her heart regained a little strength. He wasn't dying. But what did this mean? She launched herself off of her bed and ran towards the medical ward.

When she reached the room, Gillian was already dressed and addressing the situation at hand. She seemed calm and smiled lightly when Simmons came in.

"Good morning. Nothing's wrong, but something is definitely happening. I'm going to study this right now, see what's going on. Feel free to stay."

Simmons was so relieved to hear those words.

"Thank you so much for getting here. How are you so able in the mornings?"

"Light sleeper. Often wake up really early, so I just get ready when I'm up. Kind of have to as well. I should go look at this brain activity now. If you need me I'll be next door in my room. My computer equipment is in there." Simmons nodded a goodbye and Gillian left the room. Jemma squeezed Fitz's hand.

"You scared me," she whispered. She was hopeful but scared. Hopeful that he was truly okay. Scared that the abnormal activity was bad. But he was next to her, alive, and that was all that mattered.

Two hours had passed now, and Simmons was on the last page of her book. When she had finished her book, she shut it and looked at Fitz. Her W.R.E.N. buzzed again.

Abnormal Brain Activity

8:56 AM

"More?" She said. "There must be something wrong." She was about to stand up and call for Gillian when she noticed the slightest movement from his eyes.

"F-fitz?" She sat down quickly and squeezed his hand again. Another flutter from his eyes sent her heart right back to where it's supposed to be.

After a few long seconds of agonizing nothingness, his blue eyes finally showed themselves. They weren't as bright as usual, but it was enough.

He was alive.

"Fitz!" Simmons exclaimed and started crying. She kissed his forehead. Gillian burst through the door.

"The answer! I have the answer! He's-"

"Waking up!"
