Chapter Thirteen

"Good morning May."

"Morning. Wheels up in five." Simmons immediately went to the lab and let it all sink back in.

Fitz would remember all of his unfinished projects? Would he even want to continue working? Would he ever get in a good enough condition to come back on the Bus and work in the lab?

The thoughts made her want to cry, but she forced herself not to. Simmons didn't want anyone to pity her today. She was already looked at as strong for just asking to come, so she had to keep that stature.

At least on the flight.

When the guard opened the door, Ward wasn't facing them. But when he turned, Simmons couldn't help but cringe.

He looked completely different than the last time she had seen him. All of the bruises and cuts had cleared up, and he had grown a beard.

"Come to beat me up again, May? Wait..." His face twisted in confusion and what Simmons thought was a little bit of fear. She swallowed hard and looked away.

"Hello," She said shakily, not meeting his eyes. There was nothing from the other end. May broke the silence.

"Simmons, would you like to step out while I do my part? It's your choice."

"I think I'll step out."

May stalked out of the cell.

"He says he doesn't know anything."

"Well, do you believe him? It makes all the difference."

"I do. That's a first in a while. It's your turn, if you still want to." Simmons nodded.

"Yes, I'll do that. But, could you, stay out here?"

"Of course. I'll respect your privacy."

Simmons opened the door a crack, squeezed in and then shut herself in. Ward was sitting on the floor and refused to make eye contact.

"Why?"

"Why what?" He muttered.

"Why did you do it?"

"Do what?"

"All of it!" Ward paused for a painful moment.

"Garrett got me out of jail. It's a long story." Simmons thought about what she could say or do. She could leave.

She sat on the floor across from him.

"Then tell me." Ward was shocked.

"Why do you care?"

"Fitz... he thinks- thought, that there was still something good in you. I want to know if he was right."

".... After he got me out of jail, he left me. He abandoned me in the middle of the woods with a gun and a dog. When he came back, I'd changed. Threatened to kill him."

"Why didn't you?!"

"Had nowhere else to go. I probably would've ended up right back in prison. But look where I am now.

Anyways, he revealed he was HYDRA, said it was a better choice than S.H.I.E.L.D.. Before we left, he told me to kill the dog." Simmons gasped.

"Ward! Please tell me you didn't!"

"Simmons, calm down. I could never to do it when he was right in front of me, so I gave him a running start. When I shot, I nicked his tail. Not enough to kill or stop him from getting away." She sighed with relief. But there was still a question bubbling inside her.

"But.. why did you try to kill us?"

"I knew you weren't dead. I gave you-"

"A running start. And you didn't injure us enough to kill us or stop us," Simmons finished for him. She was amazed at what had really been happening inside Ward's head.

"Ward."

"What?"

"Look at me."

"I can't do it, Simmons."

"That's exactly what I thought when I came in here. But that's changed." Ward hesitated, and then looked at her. Simmons's stomach felt queasy, looking into the eyes of the man who nearly killed her.

"Ward, I may never forgive you for making Fitz go through all of this. But he was right. There's still some good in you; you've just made some terrible decisions." Without listening to what might follow, Simmons smiled weakly and walked out of the room.

"That was brave of you, Simmons."

"I.... I know."

(Hey guys.

So, we were all right. I read the season two synopsis, and Fitz is in a coma and may never regain full cognitive ability.

The thirty second promo made me flip out.

But did you see the deleted scene with Simmons and May? If you haven't, you need to.)
