Mack's POV. Chapter 12

My heart was in a million pieces after all that had happened that day. I was thankful my sister had tried to "avenge" me, but it didn't seem to help much. It seemed like not even my closest relative could cheer me up. After a few long hours of a silent, sad, and boring day, I walked out into my yard. Just as the sun was setting, I saw a familiar shadow walking towards me from behind. I turned and looked at the figure. "Hey Pony." "Hey Mack," he replied. He sat beside me and we sat in silence for a few long seconds. Finally he broke the silence with an apology. "Mack, I sure am sorry." "For what?" I asked, confused on what he thought he had done. "I shouldn't have told you to take a chance with Dally. I should have known he would have done something like that to you. Mack, I don't know what I was thinki-" I cut him off. "It's not your fault Pony. Don't even apologize. Thank you for being such a great friend though. You're real sweet." Pony and I talked for what seemed like hours. He told me of how he loved sunsets like the ones we were looking at. He said he usually didn't talk about it to anyone except Sodapop. I told him he could always talk to me. I started quietly singing "Help!" by the Beatles when it got silent. Pony told me I had a beautiful voice and I smiled widely. "It's so funny," I started. "That the song explains my feelings exactly right now. I feel like inside I'm screaming 'Help!' because I'm not sure what to do. What Dally did to me makes it really hard for me to trust you know?" "Well I'm here to help you whenever you need it," Ponyboy said. For the first time I realized how handsome he was. It was also the first time I recognized the look he was giving me. He was looking at me like I was the most beautiful girl in the world, and for the first time, I really liked it.
