Chapter 17

Shaun’s P.O.V

I heard the front door swing shut and Andy stormed in throwing his car keys onto the coffee table, he sat down on the couch and groaned. I paused the movie I had been watching and rolled my eyes at Andy. “What happened?” I asked him unenthusiastically as I joined him on the couch.

I leaned backwards in an attempt to stretch out from sitting on the floor for so long and rolled my shoulders, Andy took no notice.

“IknowthatLeolaisalesbianandstuffandhasagirlfriendbutwewentrollerbladingtogetherandIfelloverandsodidsheandthisoldguycamealongandsaidthatwewereperfecttogetherandwenearlykissedbutshequicklypulledawayanditgotallawakwardandnowIconfused.”

Andy took in a deep breath after saying all that and I gave him a ‘what-the-fuck?’ look, he tried again.

“Okay, so me and Leola went rollerblading together and we nearly kissed.” He told me slower than before.

“I thought she was a lesbian?” I asked, Andy shrugged back. I guess he was just as confused as I was.

“What do you think I should do?” I looked up at Andy, his face was 100% serious and demanding.

“I think you should talk to her.” I told him and he simply rolled his eyes,

“That’s your best advice?” he questioned me and I shrugged.

“Who’s the one with the girlfriend here?” I shot at him and was greeted with a glare.

“Fine, fine. I’ll talk to her tomorrow.” He huffed and got up before stomping off upstairs.

I pushed the play button on my remote and continued watching my movie.

It had been about 15 minutes before I heard a knocking at the door.

“Guys? The door’s locked.” Bradie yelled from behind the door.

“What’s the word?” I shouted back and I heard him groan.

I heard more knocking “Please?” he tried,

“Nope!” I replied.

“Pretty please?” he tried again, was that seriously his next answer?

“No! I thought everyone knew the word!” I gave him a clue and for a while there was silence until Bradie spoke up.

“It’s bird isn’t it?” Bradie sighed as I opened the door giggling “You’re weird as fuck Shaun.” He muttered before strolling through the door and plopping himself onto the couch.

“Took you long enough to guess.” I replied before sitting down next to him “How did the date go?” Bradie heaved a long sigh and ruffled his hair.

“I don’t even know.” He muttered “Her ex-boyfriend showed up and decided to be drunk dick and then Princess came onto the radio.”

So both Bradie and Andy had crap nights, they were both with girls. Was I the only one who had a good night?

“So I’m guessing you two left after the ex-boyfriend crap right?” I asked and he nodded, I felt sorry for him. Ruby had only gotten out of hospital this morning and already something had happened.

“What did you do all night?” Bradie said and I poked my laptop.

“Youtube.” Was all I said before grinning “I have a new band I like.” And Bradie raised his eyebrow in curiosity.

“Who are they?” Bradie questioned,

“All Time Low, they’re fucking awesome.” I replied smiling madly.

Bradie knitted his eyebrows together in concentration “Isn’t that one of Ruby’s favourite bands?” he asked “She sung one of their songs.” He had a thoughtful look on his face as he said it.

“What song?” I asked him and he shrugged,

“I think it was called Lullabies or something like that.” He mumbled and I suddenly remembered the first time I went to Ruby’s house.

Loud music pounded from her lounge room and her hallway walls was completely covered in framed pictures of movie, anime and signed band posters.

‘Sad like a candle you burned out, spill the wax over the spaces left in place of angry words. Scream to be heard like you needed any more attention. Throw the bottle, break the door and disappear.’

“What’s this song?” Andy asked, he seemed to like it.

Let’s just pray that he didn’t pull out his dance moves.

“Lullabies from All Time Low. Beautiful song.” She replied “Want anything to eat?”

I listened closer to the song’s lyrics.

‘Forever’s never seemed so long as when you’re not around, it’s like a piece of me is missing. I could have learned so much from you. Don’t you realise that you showed this family a world of pain? Can’t you see this could have been a happy ending we let go?’

“What’s it about?” I asked and she raised an eyebrow.

“It’s complicated.” She muttered “but Alex is an amazing song writer. There’s so much meaning behind his songs.” I nodded. “Well, most of them.” She quickly said.

“What’s it about?” I asked Bradie, I really wanted to know.

Bradie pulled a face as he thought hard and said “The lead singer’s brother committed suicide.” I was not expecting that at all.

“Deep.” I mumbled, Bradie grunted in agreement.

I wondered if Ruby had some kind of special connection with the song, if it meant anything to her. She seemed really attached to it. Maybe someone close to her had died or maybe someone left her. I knew it wasn’t my place to ask but I did anyway.

“What were you and Ruby talking about at the hospital?” Bradie froze and looked over at me.

“None of your business.” He replied and I rolled my eyes.

“Why not?” I groaned and Bradie sent me a death glare,

“You don’t have to know everything Shaun.” He hissed before getting up and storming off to bed.

Back to youtube, I thought before opening my laptop and continuing to watch a video.
