1 // bailey is the famous girl

Crisp fall air flowed into the Park family’s New York City apartment on a lovely Sunday afternoon. The gold colored sunlight shone through the wall length windows in the white living room and cast gorgeous long shadows on the furniture and ground. Bailey Park sat in a chair directly across from her mom and her mother’s fiancé, Hillary Park and Kevin Franklin, who were seated on the big black leather sofa.

Bailey was completely disgusted as they kissed – hard, too – when she entered and clenched on to each other’s hands as if they were going to die tomorrow. Her mother was seated half on Kevin’s lap and half on the sofa. They acted way too young for Bailey’s taste. She stared at the two for a long while until her mother spoke.

“We’re having a baby, Bailey.” She said, a massive smile creeping on her face. She unraveled her hands from Kevin’s and placed them on her stomach in a motherly way, looking at Kevin with way too lovey-dovey eyes. Bailey just continued to stare.

“What? A baby, like, mini person? That kind of baby? Not a puppy or some other small, young animal?” Bailey asked finally. She was completely taken aback by the idea of a younger sister or brother. I mean her friends would think it was awesome to have someone so pretty and little to take care of but all Bailey could think of was the baby-sitting for free and – dun dun dun – diapers.

“Yes, Bails. That kind of baby.” Hillary laughed, her shoulders relaxing. Kevin moved his hand to her shoulder and rubbed it with his thumb lovingly. They stared at each other. Literally. Just stared for what Bailey thought was way too long for her comfort.

“Mom please don’t call me that and, uh, do you guys have a name yet?” Bailey asked, looking at her hands that were folded in her lap and taping her feet nervously. The second the question left her mouth she regretted it. Silly, wasn’t it, to ask when you couldn’t even tell her mother was carrying another being in her stomach? Well, more appropriately womb but Bailey was not comfortable thinking that so she pushed it out of her mind. She looked up to meet her future stepfather’s gaze.

“Yes, we do actually.” Kevin offered then turned to face his anxious wife. “Go ahead, Hillary.” He nodded and squeezed her shoulder harder for reassurance. She smiled and let out a big breath of air.

“If it’s a girl, Jackson. If it’s a boy, Cole.” Hillary said and grinned at Bailey. “You like?”

“Yeah, of course. Jackson for a girl is… risky I guess. You sure she won’t be teased?” She asked her mother with a questionable look in her eyes, tapping her feet harder against the rug.

“Yes I know it’s risky but we completely adore the name and it’ll be so pretty for my baby. Plus, think about it Bailey, you have a name for both boys and girls too so don’t be like that. You don’t get teased.” Her mother said. Bailey was about to open her mouth and reply but decided her mother had good point.

“Yeah. Well what about the apartment? We don’t have the room for another baby, mom. You know that.” She replied instead of replying to the other comment.

“Thank you for reminding me. Actually, we inherited the family lake house when your great grandparents past and we’re moving there. They actually have a lovely community and lots of room and great schools there, Bailey. Pack up your stuff. You probably didn’t notice we’ve been packing since Monday because you were on your laptop.” Hillary said with a smile. Bailey’s jaw dropped and she stood up.
