Suits lined the walls, dresses opposite them. They ranged from white to black, grey to red. "You should wear white. You'll look like Gatsby" Kylie held up a completely white suit to her brother, Tommy.
"No way, I'm going natural with a black suit" he replied, taking three out of the rack and walking into a change room.
"How's that natural?" Kylie muttered under her breath. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, the lockscreen full of unread texts from Kayla, her best friend.Where are you?
What are you doing?
Answer your damn phone!
KYLIE CECILIA HERIN
I give up
I'm out prom suit shopping with Tommy she replied. Kayla came back with a simple okay ttyl. As Kylie lay her phone down again, Tommy came out of the changing room in suit 1.
"How about this?" he asked, doing a full spin.
"No way are you wearing that to your senior prom. Have you even seen the pants? Next" she turned back to her phone. She may only be in grade 11 but she still had some sense of style, male and female. Her brother though, in year 12, had no clue what fashion was at all. Suit two seemed like the perfect match. Tommy wasn't that fussy when it came to shopping unlike their father. "Have a date yet?" she asked as they strolled along the busy pathway in the mall.
"Nah but this piece of hot stuff is open for business though" he smirked, swinging the bag around his wrist.
Kylie gagged "Gross. You know someone asked me to go with them?"
"Yes, Sam Waters, I know. He's in my homeroom class. Plus, you guys are always together at break. Does dad know your dating a year 12?" Tommy stopped walking and looked Kylie straight in the eyes.
"Yes, he's coming over for dinner tonight" Kylie sighed and started to drag her feet.
"What the hell! You didn't tell me! He didn't either! Do you have a dress for prom too?" Tommy jogged to catch up wit her.
"No, I'll go out later this week. We should get home anyways, help dad with cooking. You know how he is" Kylie looked tired, ready to go to bed.
"Don't you want a dress? We're here now, lets get one today. And why do you seem so upset about Sam coming over?" Tommy grabbed her arm and started to drag her to the dress shop.
"I do want a dress but I wanted mum to meet Sam, but obviously she can't" Kylie pulled herself out of Tommy's grip and crossed her arms.
"I know, but let's not think about that and find you a dress. You gotta looks smokin' if you're going to be the youngest at the prom" Tommy stuck his tongue out, his brown hair flopping over his forehead. Kylie giggled, he looked like a small child.
"I guess. Let's go" she grabbed Tommy's hand and started to drag him towards the shop.
"Did you get your suit, Tom?" their dad, Joshua, was standing at the stove when they walked in the door.
"Yep, plus a dress for Ky" he chucked their bags on the ground a collapsed on the couch.
"What're you cooking dad?" Kylie leaned up against the bench as her father looked at a pot with a scared expression.
"It's supposed to be pasta, but at this point I have no idea what it is" he turned to Kylie, an apologetic look on his face as she laughed.
"It's alright, let me cook" she went to take the spoon just as the doorbell rang. "Holy shit, it'll be Sam! I look like fucking shit!" Kylie hissed as she ran upstairs to change.
"Dad, dump the pasta and order some pizza, it'll be fine" Thomas pulled himself off the couch and opened the door. "Sam, my man, come in" Sam's mop of ginger hair entered through the doorway. "Kylie's upstairs doing who knows what and this is our dad. Dad meet Sam, Sam meet dad" Thomas stood by as they shook hands.
"Nice to meet you Mr. Herin" Sam said clearly.
"Call me Josh" their dad said as he stood back from the handshake.
"Sam!" a girl's voice from upstairs made everyone in the house turn. Kylie ran down the stairs, straight into Sam's arms.
"This is going to be a long night" Thomas sighed, his dad laughing.
