The entire school was chaotic.
So much for those fire drills, Madison thought, as she hobbled on the crutches towards an emergency exit. Sebastian was right beside her, helping her along.
No one was sure as to what exactly was going on, where the fire was or what was supposed to be happening. There were announcements over the intercom, but nobody could hear them over the screaming and the alarm itself.
Sebastian pushed open the exit door and they both walked out of the back entrance to the school.
Across, the street, Madison could see Tyler and Geoff playing soccer against a wall, clearly enjoying themselves and a white cleaning van was parked close to Madison and Sebastian. Apart from that, the street was quiet compared to the havoc inside the school.
Swarms of students started exiting through the back door and Madison and Sebastian were separated. Most of the kids were screaming, some coughing.
Madison could smell the smoke.
Suddenly, Madison was grabbed from behind, a hand slammed over her mouth. Madison tried screaming and thrashing around, but whoever the person was had a strong grip and wasn't taking any of her blows at all.
She looked around, trying to meet somebody, anybody's eyes, but they were all cramped in together. Some students were crying, others had blackened faces from the fire. None of them seemed to notice Madison being dragged away towards the white cleaning van. She knew that van had been suspicious, and now she was annoyed that she didn't think of mentioning it to Sebastian. Wherever the hell he was.
Madison swore internally at her broken leg, her crutches cast off somewhere when she was first attacked. The attacker reached the van and tried to shove her in, but she squirmed around and managed a fist to his face. It wasn't a professional punch, more like a lucky shot from moving around so much.
She dropped to the ground and she screamed in pain. Damn her broken leg. Damn her broken leg. Damn her broken leg. She could have run by now, but her leg was stuck, pain splitting up her body.
The attacker tried again, grabbing her by her shoulders. She did something she regretted immediately. She bit his hand and he slapped her face so she fell to the ground. The attacker, dressed all in black with a masquerade mask on, grabbed her by the front of her shirt.
How the fuck had no one seen her being attacked yet? And who the hell was this guy? The Dancer? A masquerade mask? What in the hell was going on?
Just as that thought ran through her mind, a soccer ball hit the attacker's head hard and he let go of her once again. He dropped to the floor, his mask falling off. Madison caught a glimpse of his green eyes before he stumbled to stand up.
Madison saw Geoff standing there, laughing, "Holy shit, did I just do that?" He seemed rather pleased with himself.
Him, Tyler and Sebastian ran towards Madison, shoving their way through everyone. Madison attempted to crawl away, but her leg was in too much pain and she could barely move.
Before they reached her, the man got up and crawled into his van, slamming the doors closed and driving away.
The only thing that was left of him, was his masquerade mask.
Sebastian knelt down next to her, "You alright?"
"I feel amazing. Great. Better than ever." Madison said sarcastically. "I feel like shit, Sebastian, thanks for asking."
Geoff handed her the crutches and Sebastian helped her up. Tyler was spinning the soccer ball on his finger,
"So he sets the school on fire to get you out the back and abduct you." Tyler smirked, "Smart, honestly."
Madison ignored him and looked to Geoff, "Thanks for that kick, by the way."
Geoff grinned, "Don't mention it."
Madison held the masquerade mask in her hand. It was purple, with gold embroidery and little gems sparkled all over it. It was pretty, and also quite strange.
Madison was certain she saw the green eyes, and she was certain that was The Dancer.
*** Author's Note ***
Close encounter, or what? The next chapter will be pretty intense, with a lot of information about The Dancer and how he operates revealed. This chapter's purpose was to introduce Geoff more into the story because he has a large part in the major overall plot, so just keep that in mind.
Hopefully I'll also be updating my other book, Our Bucket List, very shortly.
