"Amber watch out!" Kayla screams. I blink and look up to face the scorching sun that immediately gets eclipsed by a tennis ball that hurtles towards my face. Registering the words a second too late, my head bounces from the impact of the neon yellow ball. "OW!" I yell as I massage my forehead. I drop my hand and glare at Kayla across the court.
"Sorry!" she apologises, shoulders shaking with laughter. I glare some more and refuse the temptation to give in and laugh at my own ignorance. "How's the head?" Katy asks from beside me. She indicates with a wave of her slightly deformed tennis racket. "Throbbing." I say, though the pain had faded a few seconds ago.
I've been spacing out a lot lately. Wandering to parts of my mind that usually ends up with me being completely lost; Or from the outside world glassy eyed and unresponsive. My gramps' likes to call me an introspector-for someone who likes to examine their own thoughts and feelings-in a pensive way. And it's true. There are times where I stop what I'm doing just to think. Scheme, for a crazy idea, thought up at 2:00 in the morning where I should be sleeping or revising for a test the next day. Whoever said multitasking was a thing. (Where can i buy it?!) Occasionally, I'll come across something interesting, or paradoxical. The most recent being the idea of chasing sunsets, that I've been mulling over for a good few weeks.
"Amber?" Katy says suddenly. I blink and swim out from my daze.
"Sorry, spaced out again."
Kayla rolls her eyes and I change the subject before she can scorn me.
"So, what you guys up to this summer?"
Katy shrugs, non-committed.
"Well, let's see," Kayla begins. "I'll wake up at 1:00 after partying all night," I scoff and she glares at me. "And then I'll put on my bikini and sunbathe in my garden-next to the giant pool..." I let her drone on for a bit with her fantasy before interrupting: "and in the real world?" She chucks the racket at me. I dodge it narrowly and Katy laughs.
"So," I say loudly. "Do you think you'd be free to spend some humble time in the presence of Amber Rachel Mercury?" Abandoning the tennis racket and bouncing towards the tiny bit of shade created by the lump of trees next to the tennis courts.
"You know, just for the usual." Casually now.
"Amber," they say in unison with the same amount of suspicion.
"What are you planning?" Crap. My cover's blown.
"So, imagine trying to chase the sun, going at the same pace so that its constantly day time." They groan like a pair of tired parents.
"And while you're chasing the sun, you'd travel the world too. It would be like a super cool road trip, with a completely educational and testable theory and bucket list all rolled into one!" Buzzing with the concept.
"No." Katy says flatly at the same time Kayla mumbles:
"you're actually insane."
"...."
"...."
"Okaaaay, I'll let you think about it." I stretch out suggestively and walk off before the bell goes off.
But the thing is, I've already planned it. The next big adventure is the same as any other idea I've had before that. And they've gone along with my schemes for longer than I can remember. I just need a chance.----------------------------------------------
