Mrs. Lovett had instructed the barber to quickly run down to her apartment and clean up in the shower. When he had ran off to do so he did it quick enough to where Lucy couldn't see him. Toby of course didn't see the demon barber for his bedroom door was closed.
The baker stayed in the parlor and happily cleaned up the place. The stench didn't bother her and whenever the blood would stain her hands she didn't mind. She couldn't help but imagine Todd stabbing the judge countless times without a care in the world.
She then took a rag that was dripping with water and began running it across the demonized chair. Blood turned the white rag to red. She then bent down on her knees to the get the arms of the chair and when she did so she caught a glance out the window. The starry night was beautiful. How the moon lit up the sky with the help of a thousand little stars. She continued to stare out the window and could picture Todd in the stars. It was like connect to dots to create a picture, and the picture was her beloved demon barber. The demon barber she could never have.
The door then opened and as always the bell gave a ring. Mrs. Lovett's head immediately turned; expecting a blood-free, sparkling clean Sweeney Todd, but it wasn't. Lucy Barker stood at the doorway with a sorrow look.
'Oh gees,' Mrs. Lovett thought. 'Here comes little miss perfect to give me lecture to stay away from Mr. Todd.'
"Mrs. Lovett?" Her gentle voice broke the night's silence. She took a small step inside the parlor and took a look around. "Do you need another hand?"
It wasn't something Mrs. Lovett expected to hear. Why would she want to help the woman who loves her husband. "Uh sure, if ya don't mind."
Lucy then took more steps inside and Mrs. Lovett handed her a blood-free wet rag. "Quite a mess huh?" Mrs. Lovett forced a conversation even though it was as awkward as could be.
"Well you're cleaning up with no problem, how?" Lucy began to wipe down the left side of the chair and Mrs. Lovett got the right.
"Well it's not the first time Mr. T asked me to help clean up. After awhile I got use to it," she happily stated. She was a bit surprised that Lucy actually wanted to talk about the blood and stuff.
Lucy kept quiet for a few seconds. She then turned around to cleanse the window, but then looked back to the baker. "Look, Mrs. Lovett, I-"
"Call me Eleanor, dear," Mrs. Lovett stated but kept her eye on the job.
"Eleanor... I didn't just come up to help you clean."
'Oh dear, she came up to rat me out. She's gonna yell at me to leave Mr. Todd.'
"I came up here to talk about what I said earlier today," Lucy sighed. "I was acting like a spoiled bitch."
Mrs. Lovett was a bit astonished by Lucy's choice of words, but it did correctly describe her.
"I regret everything I said to you..." She continued with a bit hesitation. "I mean, learning that Ben was never dead, but instead turned to be homicidal.... It kinda just takes adjusting to."
"Dear, it's alright. It's not everyday you learn a loved one has gone bonkers," Mrs. Lovett forced a smile. It was his bonkers-ness that made her love the barber. It was his tricking, devil smile that lit up her world.
"And I guess to let that grief out... I kinda let it out on you," she whispered. "So what I'm really saying is... I'm sorry."
Mrs. Lovett finally lifted her head from the work and looked at the demon barber's wife. She was actually sorry. The more the baker looked at her, the more she was a bit disappointed. There stood the love of Todd's life. His only love. But then Mrs. Lovett remembered the gentle, thank you he had said to her. How his eyes were locked on hers.
