Opening my eyes, I noticed light peeking through some light green curtains, that hung over a window. The room I remember being in didn't have curtains let alone a window. Rolling over I then noticed I wasn't laying on the hard bathroom floor but was in a bed, a small hard bed, with scratchy white sheets. Sitting up and pushing the sheets off I looked around the room. It was a small room, with a door in the corner with a window next to it. A desk sat on the other side of the room, where a scale and a set of filing cabinets sat. On the walls, were posters of the human body and a checklist of signs and symptoms of the common cold. I sat in one of two beds that were placed in the middle of the room. As my mind started to come back, I then realized I was in the nurse's office. Someone had actually been kind enough to carry me here.
I sat there for a few more minutes before I decided to stand up and call for the nurse. I needed to get out of here, the room was too small for my liking. Standing up, I started to feel light headed, and a pain at the back of my head started to throb. I must have hit my head pretty hard when I fell. Rubbing the back of my head I started walking through the small room, adjusting my hair and clothing, right as I reached for the door handle, I could hear voices talking on the other side of the door.
"Is Shay ok?"
"Yes she is fine, she is going to have a headache for a few hours but she is fine."
"I hope your right if anything happens to her, I just couldn't, I just, I don't know."
"She is fine, but you should probably get back to class."
I wanted to hear who's voice that was speaking to the nurse so I slowly started turning the handle on the door. I peered through the crack but all I could see was the nurse's backside. Opening the door wider to see around her, I noticed that no one was there.
"Shay, your awake." The nurse said.
"Yeah, I should probably get back to class," I said timidly.
"That won't be necessary, why don't you go sit down and I will take your vitals. Make sure your ok." She said with a small smile.
"I'm fine, really," I said not wanting to be bothered. I saw how she looked at me, I didn't want all the nosey questions. Before she could say another word I walked around her and out to the hallway. Looking up at the clock I noticed there was half an hour left of school. I decided to say screw it and went to my locker. Grabbing my things I left the school, I was done for the day.
The walk home seemed to take longer than normal, my head still hurt from the fall. I was almost home, just a few more blocks and I could take a few painkillers and take a nap.
As I reached my front door, I could hear voices. I didn't have to wonder who's voices they were though. Opening the door slowing. I could hear my mother whisper yelling at my dad.
"She turns eighteen tomorrow Jim, we need to get her out of here." my mom said angerly.
"I know Rebecca." my father said, sounding almost sad.
"As soon as 12:00 strikes she will have her full powers." my mom said sounding scared this time.
Full powers? I thought to myself. What was going on around here? First, my appearance changes and now I'm going to have powers? I decided to walk in and figure out what my parent were talking about.
"Shay, what are you doing home so early?" my father said surprised.
"whats going on mom? Dad?" I looked at both of they're faces. They both looked scared but also guilty. But neither one of them spoke. I started to get angry, I was so tired of no one listening and wanting me that I felt like I was going to explode.
"Shay calm down!" my mother screamed. Her eyes wide with fear as she stared into my eyes.
Looking over at my father I noticed he too was staring at me with fear but he was looking at the res of my body.
I followed his stare, but nothing seemed off until I looked at my arms and hands.
It was like you could see my heartbeat in my veins. My veins we're almost bursting out of my skin, and they were red, like blood and my nails seemed to get longer and sharper. I gasped as I felt pain in my fingertips from my nails. I was scared, I ran from their scared faces, runny down the hallway to the bathroom. Flipping on the light, and looking at my reflection. In the mirror, I saw the same girl from the school bathroom, except her eyes were no longer silver, instead were red, red like blood, and her skin no longer porcelain but covered in thick red veins that are beating with my heartbeat.
This can't be happening I thought. What's going on?
I turn away from the mirror and pace the small bathroom, willing myself to breathe. In and out. I walk back to the mirror when I feel my self relax. This time when I look back in the mirror, I see a scared girl with long wavy hair, porcelain skin and red eyes that are starting to turn back to silver.
Taking a deep breath and splashing some cold water on my face, I walk back out to my parents.
They were both sitting at the family kitchen table. Dad with his head in his hands and my mother sobbing softly.
They hear me walk into the kitchen and both look up.
"Whats going on?" I ask again, softer this time.
