Granddad would not stop talking about his new girl. Or should I saw woman. Old woman.
Charlotte's so beautiful, Charlotte's so intelligent, everything she says is a work of art. Then he comes home and as he likes to call it, talks to Grandma's 'spirit'. The whole fiasco confused me. How could he go on a date with another woman, yet still see the ghost of his deceased wife? Just the other day he was on the verge of tears talking about the woman he loved for more than fifty years. And now he'd replaced her.
I wasn't mad or anything, really. After all, I was the one who set him up to all this. I thought it'd be good for him. Even Dad found a new woman. He seemed so much happier nowadays. I was just terribly confused. How did that work? What was moving on, exactly? How could one just stop loving someone? Or better yet, how could someone forget about the one they loved and start loving someone new? Was that physically possible? And if it wasn't physically possible, how were my two most favorite people in the world putting up with it?
Dad had just told me about his new woman, Liz. She worked at the local grocery store. No wonder Dad started shopping so much lately. Normally it was I who had to run errands around the house. We were always short on milk and we never had snacks in the fridge.
According to him they weren't an official couple or anything yet, but he wanted to invite her over that night to introduce her to me. That's the greatest thing about my dad. He values my approval. It's always just been the three of us- him, Granddad and I. If anyone or anything came in between to disrupt that, we made sure to take each other's consideration first. That was our definition of family.
"Daze, Ava's old friend Shay is coming over. Apparently she used to go to your school, but then she moved away....?" Dad popped up at my room door. My eyes widened in surprise. "Shay? Gosh, it's been forever! I knew her because she designed the costumes for the cheer team! We were never close, but Ava talks about her a lot. I'd love to meet her!"
Dad grinned. "That's great, kiddo. Because they're right outside at this very moment." As soon as he said that, Ava walked into my room with a brunette girl following behind her. She looked the same as before. I smiled and waved a little. "Hi! It's so great to finally meet you!" I said chirpily.
Dad took this as a cue to leave and shut the door behind him. "Daisy! Wow, you're as cheerful as ever! I missed that,"she said, beaming. I immediately knew that we were going to get along very well.
She eyed the crochet top I had on with interest. "That's so pretty, where'd you get it from?" she asked curiously. I giggled. "I made it."
Her mouth dropped open in shock. It looked comical, even. I knew she was going to give me the same reaction as everyone I knew. "Make me one!" or "You've got talent!" or "God, you're such a grandma."
Instead, all she said was, "Teach me."
The rest of the evening we spent sitting together talking about our love for fashion and designing. I didn't consider a future in fashion because it was more of a hobby for me. I didn't have any clue as to what I was going to do later with my life, but Shay was very particular about getting into her dream school for fashion technology. She told me she was much better at sewing and the designing aspect of things, but had always wanted to learn an art like knitting or crochet to develop her handiwork and broaden her spectrum in the world of fashion. I thought that was impressive, seeing how much work she'd already put and how much thought she'd put into her future. That made me incredibly insecure and more confused than ever.
Ava watched us ramble on about Shay's work and our dreams and aspirations for a while, then left to visit Ted because... well, because he was Ted. Also, because she was Ava and art wasn't her cup of tea.
Ava played the violin. In my opinion, she could easily be confused with a child prodigy. She was just that good. Although she never spoke to anyone else about it, I knew that her dream was to one day make it to Julliard. That girl had talent. There was no question about her making it big one day.
Later, Shay took me to visit her boyfriend Jace, who was also with Ted and Ava at the time. He seemed like a cool guy and I felt like if they both lived in our town, we would be a group that regularly hung out. That thought was enough to make me happy.
"Hey, what do you guys say to dinner at my place tonight?" I asked them, the idea suddenly popping into my head.
Ava threw me a grateful smile. She loved that her new best friend was getting along with her former best friend.Jace smiled sadly. "Aw, I'd really love to, but we're leaving tomorrow morning and I bet my grandma wants to spend some quality time with me."
Ava tried to hide her displeasure, but to me she was transparent.
I wasn't going to take no for an answer."Then bring her along as well."
Jace smiled and Shay did a little woop in the air. I was overjoyed. I knew Dad was getting his date home tonight, but I also knew for a fact that he loved it when we had big get- togethers. Since our house was quite lonely on regular evenings, it just being the three of us, he loved having company over. The more the merrier.I knew with certainty that it was going to be one hell of a night.
A/N Short chapter, for a change. Sorry I haven't been updating in a while! I'll be sure to write some extra chapters to make up for it. I'm really excited for you to read the upcoming one :))))
