It was the first day of Spring Break. A day full of possibility. A day to complete all the unfinished to do lists. A day to change.
"And she scores!" Will yelled, pulling Kat into a massive bearhug.
"Well, what did you expect?" Ted remarked with a hint of jealousy in his tone.
"Is someone upset that he lost to little Katherine Mills?" Kat teased, using the words he'd taunted her with right before the game.
"Pfft no," Ted rolled his eyes, a flicker of a smile playing on his lips.
"Someone's a sore loser," Will chuckled, patting Ted on the back. Kat smirked at him, watching as his face became a beet red colour. It was very easy to get him flustered, so that was hers and Will's favourite pass time.
"Hey, I didn't say anything!" Ted protested, his voice going all high-pitched and squeaky.
"It's okay man, you'll find a new talent someday," Will said smugly.
Kat began to tune out their childish banter as she noticed a raven-haired boy watching her from the bleachers. When she caught his gaze, he smiled, and she felt her body go numb with excitement. His piercing grey eyes dug deep into her, and she feared that he could read every thought passing through her mind in that instant.
Oh, how screwed she'd be if he could, Kat thought to herself.
Before she knew it, the boy jumped up from his spot and started to make his way down towards her. With every step he took, Kat's heart started to beat faster and faster.
She'd watched him on stage before. He was like a child prodigy: reciting lines from plays she'd never even heard about, bringing characters to life right before her eyes. He was a chameleon. With every performance, he changed his colour.
"Kat, we're going to Matt's for ice cream," Will called, popping up right behind her.
"I'll be there in a minute," she replied through clenched teeth, annoyed at having been interrupted.
But as she turned back, The Chameleon had changed his colours yet again, and was then moving towards the cheerleaders. She'd lost her chance.
"What is your problem?" Kat yelled, punching Will's shoulder.
"Woah, what did I do?" Will asked innocently, knowing very well what he had done. Jealousy made him act out in ways he wasn't proud of.
"You interrupted my moment!" Kat said frustratedly, pushing Will to the ground.
"Kat, calm down," Ted said impatiently. He was sick and tired of his two best friends fighting all the time. Kat was too hot-headed and Will was just.... stupid! Conflict was inevitable between the two.
"What moment?" Will shouted back, still on the ground. Ted facepalmed.
"You know I like him," Kat said, sounding defeated. "You know I like him and you interrupted our moment anyway, you jerk!" She shouted again, stomping her feet in the dirt.
Will looked like someone had slapped him. "You.... you like him?" Will asked slowly. Ted knew his friend couldn't have been that oblivious. He was starting to believe that perhaps, just perhaps.... he was in denial. In denial towards the feelings that were slowly creeping up.
"Yes, you dimwit," Kat chuckled, extending a hand to lift him up.
And it was in the way that her eyes softened at his touch, the way that she continued to tease him even hours later just to make him laugh and the way that she picked a fight with him just for an excuse to touch him that Ted knew.... she was in denial too.
"My mom's picking us up at eight, so you have one hour left, okay?" Will said suddenly, his eyes set on the front door.
Kat looked up at him in confusion. "Where are you going?" she asked.
"I'm not going anywhere," he smiled smugly. "But you are," he said, motioning to a figure sitting by himself outside the house.
Kat couldn't help but gasp. "No way," she mouthed.
Will nodded enthusiastically, but he couldn't help but feel a nagging sensation in the back of his mind. He was probably just worried for his best friend, that's all.
"Be careful," he said, his hand grazing her shoulder. She smiled.
"And don't go too far, your dad will kill me," he reminded her.
"Also, please don't do anything illegal," he said as an afterthought, but she was already gone, chasing after her first crush.
"Where's Kat?" Ted asked, appearing beside Will. He pointed in her direction. She was sitting in the grass next to that boy- Draven Hall, was it?- and laughing like she'd never heard anything funnier.
And there it was again- that feeling. That nagging sensation in the back of his mind that kept growing and growing.
"Both of you are idiots," Ted sighed, unable to comprehend how Will had let her go so easily.
But alas, a fairytale ending didn't follow this Will and Kate story.
As Ted remembered all of this one night four years later as he lay in bed, racking his mind trying to find out who Holly's second soulmate could be, it dawned on him.
It was the first crush Holly ever had.
It was the first day of Spring Break. And a day of change it was indeed.
