Chapter 4 - Unknown facts
The most beautiful lake spread out in front of me. It was so dark blue it had a violet tinge to it. Nobody was here. Maybe it was a special place that no one knew about.
"Where...?" I trailed off still in awe. A waterfall flowed to one side. I was so shocked by its beauty that I didn't see Cody point upwards until he touched my shoulder lightly. Sparks fluttered through my arm. I looked up and above me where countless tree houses with intersecting paths between them. It was like a city in the sky.
"This is where most of the pack lives," Cody explains as he leads me to a staircase going up to one of the hanging bridges. "The higher ranks or the pack doctors live in the houses but this is for safety purposes. If we're attacked we have an advantage." I must have had such a bewildered expression because Cody chuckled a bit.
"What," I say raising my brows and Cody just keeps silently laughing to himself. We reach the bridge and as we wander along it I notice other people walking along the other ones. From up here, you can see how far this place stretches for. There is an uncountable number of little tree houses, some bigger than others.
We wander along and Cody points out a few places. As we walk many people smile at us, some tense up and stiffly nod their head, others look at me with a shocked expression to which Cody returns with a growl.
Awww he's protecting us! Hailey, my wolf, says.
"He ruined our life remember." I snarl back
No, I don't remember because I forgive him. She retorts back and shuts me out. I look back to Cody to see him giving me a weird look. I smirk and he continues walking.
"Are you hungry," Cody says suddenly as were walking back down to the ground. we didn't talk much as we walked just enjoyed the pleasant silence. I shake my head quickly. He growls and I look up. A young girl, maybe five, is pulling another girls hair.
My instincts kick in and before I know what I'm doing I sweep the angry girl up in my arms and begin tickling her. She giggles and I smile. The sound is so sweet and innocent.
"Why were you pulling that girl's hair?" I ask sweetly and the younger girls lip wobbles. I think she about to cry but then she speaks up.
"She stole my chocolate bar." The girl whimpers and I almost burst out laughing. It's something I remember Cecelia complaining about when we were younger. I put the girl down on the ground. "Please don't hurt the girl again but if she steals your chocolate bar you can come and find me." I smile again and the girl wraps her arms round my neck.
"I'm Lucy and you can be my friend." She whispers, giggling a bit.
"I'm Rose and I'd be very happy to be your friend," I say hugging Lucy back. Maybe I could survive here. It's nothing like the rumours.
An older woman gives me a smile before calling Lucy. I smile after her and stand up. I look around and Cody's nowhere to be seen.
I wander around the forest for a bit before a man comes up to me, he looks to be about Cody's age. He smiles at me before sticking out his hand. "I'm the beta around here, my names Oliver but Oli is fine." I return the smile and shake his warm hand. Wow, his grip is firm. Like, Cody, his body is muscled and perfect except Cody's still hotter. I blush instantly, I blame the mate bond for that comment.
"Rose," I say still smiling. "Do you know where Cody went?" I ask and Oli suddenly looks nervous.
"Pack problems..." He trails off and I almost growl. Cody told him to not tell me anything and probably also told him to take me straight home. I wasn't a puppy to be told what to do.
"Take me to him." I say straight up. I wasn't weak and I wasn't a puppet. "Please." I added on after seeing Oli's unsure expression. He caves after a few seconds.
"Fine but I'm warning you, what you see here is the better side of our pack." I just shake my head as an indication the I don't care and follow after Oli.
We enter a big building and inside is a meeting hall filled with people. I hear a growl and spin around to see Cody.
"I told you to take her home," Cody said angrily to Oli, confirming my suspicions that I wasn't doing what he wanted.
"I didn't want to go home," I said simply with a sweet, mocking smile. "What is this place anyway?" I ask and Cody just walks off and barges out the door. Great. I follow after him throwing Oli and apologetic look.
"What is your problem?" I ask Cody as I stalk out the door and into the tree line where he is standing.
"Why won't you do as I ask?" He fires back. I don't really like arguing with him like this
"I'm not a dog, you can't order me around." I glare at him. Was he really this shallow, maybe the rumours were true about him having no heart.
"You will do as I say." He growls at me. I almost flinch at his tone. It was icy cold and I could see how angry he was but I wasn't going to bow down to him.
"I will do as I wish and no matter how much you hate it I will not be put on a leash by a monster." The words slip my mouth so fast I didn't have time to stop them. Cody's eyes go black. I see him raise his hand and instinctively I whimper and shield my face. I open my eyes after a few seconds when no blow comes, I notice that Cody had raised his hand to run it through his hair not to hit me. His eyes are soft now.
"Is that how low you think of me? That I would hit my own mate?" He asks so quietly I feel guilty for my frosty words.
"You killed my parents, I don't know what to think of you," I mutter, Cody's head snaps up and he looks at me with shocked eyes.
"What?" He demands, oh great now I have to explain my sad life story to him.
"When I was thirteen my parents were framed for murder and one night when we were planning to run away." I looked up at Cody his eyes were hard and I couldn't read the emotion in them. "We were just about to leave when this boy, you, rounded the corner and yelled that my parents were here." I continue my story answering all Cody questions about how long ago this was and where it was.
"That wasn't me," Cody says simply and my eyes widen in shock. If it wasn't him who was it?
"Are you sure?" I ask. How would he know it was so long ago. Maybe it wasn't him. Maybe I was remembering it wrong.
"I was away that year with my family, we took a two year trip around the world. It can't have been me." The sincerity in his voice made it clear he was telling the truth. I started crying and Cody swept me up into his arms. I had spent my whole life hating a man who was innocent. My thoughts were a mess, I just wanted to sleep.
As he carried me home I cried the whole time. Cody rocked me gently.
"Rose please stop crying I can think straight with you being upset." He gently rubbed my back and I whimpered a bit but I wiped my eyes and smiled at him.
"I'm sorry for hating you," I mumbled again and my bottom lip quivered. He pulled me into his lap. I looked up at him, his green eyes captured mine.
"Rose..." He trailed off and then he placed me gently back in my seat and stormed out the front door.
