Chapter 20 – What's the catch?
"If I wasn't an alpha I would probably be shit scared of your brother," Cody whispers when we're both back in bed after giving Riley a small house up in the trees to stay in.
"Yeah cause you're so fearless being an alpha." I tease with a roll of my eyes, the news was bad but seeing Riley brightened my mood and knowing Cody was with me made me feel a lot better.
"You want to know what I'm really afraid of?" His breath is warm and caresses the side of my face, I nod in answer and push myself over to look him in the eye. "You, when you're mad at me." He says with a grin and I roll my eyes again while I snicker, I was kind of expecting something else.
"And here I was expecting a soppy 'losing you' sort of thing," I mutter feigning sadness but a grin breaks across my face when Cody laughs at me, so much for being a good actor.
"That too but I think you might be scarier than your brother when you're pissed." He says pulling me closer into his chest and folding me into his arms. I've never felt safer when I'm in Cody's arms and it's a relaxing feeling, enough to help me speak my worries.
"You'll never hate me right?" I ask chewing on my bottom lip in a very unseductive way but at the moment I couldn't care less.
"Never. Mad, pissed off maybe, but never hate, I couldn't." His voice holds sincerity and honesty, I relax slightly but a part of me still worries that after seeing what my parents can do he'll think I'm the same.

"Sooner or later?" I ask immediately as Riley saunters through the front door then curse myself quietly and bite my lip as both Sammie and Chloe look up from the television and their breakfast. I shake my head quickly when Riley opens his mouth and motion towards the girls, his eyes show understanding and then confusion.
"Are they your children?" He asks almost shocked but he sounds angry too. I let out a chuckle as I shake my head, he looked ready to kill Cody. Seeing Chloe is not too much younger than me I can't imagine what went through his head.
Sammie runs over to me and throws her arms around my neck when I pick her up to place her on my lap. She looks between me and Riley a few times and I can almost see her fitting the puzzle pieces together so I stay quiet and wait for her to speak.
"Are you Roro's brother?" She pipes up finally and Riley's brow furrows for a moment before he puts two and two together and realizes I'm Roro.
"He is and his name is Riley," I tell her, "and these two are Cody's younger sisters, Sammie and Chloe," I say in turn as I point towards them and Sammie grins to herself when I told her she was right. Riley watches us silently, a look of sadness hovers over his features.
It takes me a moment to realize he's mourning the childhood we never got together, the times he never got to protect me as a big brother or when he had to carry me home after I tripped over. The times I would run into his room and beg for him to read me a story or play a game with me. The memories we never got to make. I give him a sad smile when Sammie turns back to watching the movie.
"Girls mom's coming to pick you up soon so finish up," Cody says coming in, he's dressed comfortably in a tight-fitting black shit, surprise surprise, and camouflage cargo pants matched with combat boots, another surprise, not.
His hair is wet and messy but somehow he pulls it off and I refrain from giving him 'gooey love eyes' with my brother and the girls in the same room so I look towards the ground when my cheeks heat slightly. I swear Cody let's out a small chuckle before covering it with a cough.
Once the girls leave and I give Sammie one last hug and a promise to come to watch more movies with her soon I get down to business. Cody sits beside me while Riley takes a seat across from me. The two seem to be more relaxed but I still wouldn't say they're anywhere close to being comfortable.
"So would mom and dad attack sooner-" I break off mid-sentence, with the two glaring at each other it's quite a distraction. I pinch Cody's side and he lets out a hiss before glaring at me. "Quit it or I'll be shoving you out of the room and I'll get answers myself, "I tell him sternly, he huffs and crosses his arms but shuts up thankfully.
Riley looks like he wants to laugh but he hides it quickly as I turn my attention back to him, but not for long when Cody mutters something. "And she's shocked when I said she was scared." I'm torn between yelling at him and laughing at the same time so I settle for elbowing him to which he returns but a cough from Riley has me red-faced and back to business.
My red cheeks are very obvious and Cody covers another laugh with a cough, badly might I add, knowing that he doesn't want to annoy me any more than I already am.
"I'd say later, dad will probably want to find weaknesses or loopholes before going in," Riley says getting the gist of the previous question I had left unfinished thanks to a stupid someone.
"He won't find any," Cody grumbles but goes silent again when I turn to him with a brow raised. Let me rephrase that, a stupid, annoying someone.
"He'll look anyway but you've met him Rose he's not going to stop at anything so the best thing to do is prepare, it seems you already have a strong defence but we need to make it bulletproof, no gaps or anything," Riley says and I suppress a sudden strong feeling of pride for what Cody has accomplished. Cody nods in agreement and I strum my finger on the table, it seems to simple, there has to be a catch.
"What's the catch?" I ask scowling at the table, Cody looks towards me in confusion and Riley looks at me with a look that can only mean worse news.
"Dad doesn't just want you back but he wants him dead along with anyone close to you, he's building up and if he does attack soon we might not be prepared," Riley says with a nod towards Cody and my blood runs cold at the words.
