Chapter 1: the unknown

Rowan Kane had read stories about the people on earth longing to go into space to see the plants and the moon but 97 years after a nuclear Armageddon had destroyed the earth and everything on it including the people had been left behind instead of heading into space where 12 different national space stations had joined together in order to form the ark that they had all grown to know, she knew that the stories made it seem more fun and exciting than the reality they were stuck in. Living in such restricted space meant that there had been some harsh laws created in order to keep the peace and to keep them all alive such as restricting families of only having one child or ensuring that every crime is punishable by death. Unless you were underage the of 18 like 17 year old Rowan was for another four month as she counted her small mercies as she sat in her small cell thinking of the crime that landed her in there a year ago as she played her shoulder length almost black wavy hair that seemed to complement her slightly tanned skin tone and brown eyes, she also had a nose piercing to show her rebellious side. As Rowan lay on the small bed  in her cell room reading a book she had read a million times before when she suddenly heard a disruption coming from outside her cell as she became curious about what was going on

" prisoner three one four, face the wall" the guard said as he opened her cell door making her stand up in attention since the guards rarely entered the prisoners cells as she knew the on reason to for this

" what's going on?" Rowan said throwing her book on the bed as she realised that the guards would only come into her cell to take her if they were going to float her but that wasn't to happen for months yet

" quiet, hold out your right arm" the guard said or rather demanded as she realised that something wasn't right as she looked past her cell door to hear that the other guards were doing to the same to the others

" no, I'm still 17 okay?... hey don't touch me!" Rowan said after one of the guards grabbed her arm to force her into doing what they said before she pulled her arm away from him with some amount of force

" hold still and let me place this on you, it's important!" The guard said aware that she was still just a kid as he wished that she would just do as he said as he grabbed her arm again before she did the same

" get off me" Rowan said before she used her strength to pull the guard off his feet into the ground allowing her the chance to run out of her cell and into the hallway to see the others were being taken

" let me handle this ok? Rowan, stop" Marcus Kane said stepping between the guards so that he was moving closer to her as he knew that he was the only one that she was going to listen to right now

" Dad, what's going on? What are they doing? Are they like floating all of us or something?" Rowan said to her adoptive father who had raised her after finding her wrapped in a blanket in the halls

" they're not floating you, you're being sent down to the ground. The ark is dying and you're being a second chance as well as a chance to safe us all, Ro" Kane said as he tried to calm her down

" wait earth? We're being sent to earth? But it's not safe yet" Rowan said knowing from all the lessons and lectures that she had received about what had happened to earth and the future for them all

" that's why they want to place on the band on your wrist. Listen you need to survive this, you do whatever can ok? You're so strong and so brave, more than you know" Kane said willing her to listen

" please don't let them do this to me... please, don't..." Rowan said begging him as he injected her with a sedative in order to knock her out as she began to lose conscious praying that he would listen to her
