Joy wasn't able to reply right away. The look in Sungjae's eyes made her stood rock-still. She could see the anger slowly fading but the sadness—no, the disappointment, it was still there.
"I'm sorry, oppa," she mumbled, a little guilty. "—if I didn't tell you he contacted me. I-I..It was unexpected and he said it was only for a while."
Sungjae gave her a small smile before gently squeezing her hand. It made her feel guilty even more.
"It's okay, Sooyoung-ah," he breathed, like letting out the frustration he didn't want to show. Joy could see how bothered he was, but he wasn't expressive when it comes to the bad end of emotions. "I just overreacted. It's me who should be sorry. I know I don't have the right to—"
"No..oppa. That's not true," Joy interrupted. Gathering his hands to hold it between hers. "Please don't say that."
He smiled, but the sparkle she usually sees in his eyes was nowhere to be found.
"Let's go. Our member's must've been cursing already since we're still not back," he suggested, already taking a step forward.
It was obvious Sungjae didn't want to talk about it anymore. Thinking he might need sometime, Joy decided to let it go for now.
Hand in hand, they strolled towards their waiting rooms and stopped in front of Red Velvet's. Four doors ahead was BTOB's room, his hyungs loud voices could be heard until the end of the hallway.
Giving the paper bag to her, Sungjae held her hand, brushing it with lightly with this thumb. His eyes watched their joined hands.
He didn't want to let go, but he also didn't want Joy to see him like that. He felt sorry for acting the way he did at the same time he didn't.
It was new for him. He was a moody person—yes, but since years ago, he has never let his anger be shown to others and definitely not in public. That was the last thing he wanted to show Joy.
But today was different. It was so easy to let that part of him control his emotions. He felt sorry to Joy for seeing him that way, but not to the guy. That part he had no regrets.
When Sungjae looked up from staring at their hands, he found Joy gaping at him seriously. He knew why, but right now, that topic was out of the question.
"You should go inside. They're probably waiting," he croaked. Gesturing for the door before them as he smiled.
She nodded nonchalantly. All she could see was how his smile never reached his eyes.
"Oppa..are you okay?" she trailed off, seeing Sungjae avert his gaze.
The door behind her was receiving his attention in an effort not to make eye contact as he replied, "Don't worry, I'm fine."
Lies.
He thought, before mentally slapping himself for being such a jerk.
Joy could only smile in surrender. One thing she knows about Sungjae, he will not say anything when he doesn't like it or when he isn't ready.
Still holding his hand, she slowly stepped back. "Okay. I'm going in now."
Sungjae just nodded and smiled. She turned around about to open the door, then she stopped.
Joy looked back before spinning around to face him again. Taking a step forward, she moved closer and kissed his cheek. She knew that he was surprised with the way his eyes flickered at her action.
She kept their eye contact as she retreated from where he's standing.
"Jalga..nampyeon," she reminded as she bit her bottom lip to prevent a smile.
