Halli drew in closer towards me, her sheer presence made the room feel a lot colder. She lent her arm against the side of my chair and whispered,
"Don't act foolish with me, What are you?"
I shook my head and tried to raise my hands again, there was no use struggling the chains were restricting me and there was nothing I could do about it.
"I honestly don't know what you're on about Halli, please just let me go, where are my parents?"
She sighed and responded,
"You really are clueless aren't you."
I nodded. With that she slid her chair over so that I could view the computer screen that was situated behind her. On the screen were a series of lines, one red, one blue and one a sort of orange colour. She pointed to the first red line and stated,
"The red line represents your, heart-beat."
The line was completely straight, no bumps or curves. I should have been dead. The line continued to pan out, permanently straight.
"The second line" She said, "Is the line that shows how your over all body temperature is doing"
The line was plummeting downwards in a vertical spiral. It showed that I should be freezing, but I wasn't. I was ferociously sweating.
"The final line, shows how fast your heart is pumping, also used to show how fearful you are in this moment."
There was no orange line. Just a blank dark space where it should have been.
"Umm I think your machine is broken." I laughed.
"No, it is working just fine, you're the one that is broken Alex." She replied as she fixed another wire to my left wrist.
What she had just stated took a while to sink in, I was the broken one? It left me wondering, Who am I? Maybe I'm not who I originally thought I was. Halli span back around on her chair and picked up a small machine. It was a tiny green box with a little grey screen and two prods poking out of the top of it. She began to bring it closer to my arm, when she was a few inches a way from inserting it into my skin I yelped,
"What are you doing with that thing?!"
She ignored me and continued with her experiment, the two sharp points proceeded to pierce my flesh and after a few moments of excruciating pain the machine gave off four loud beeps. Halli pulled the spikes out of my flesh and placed her hand onto the holes that were spilling out blood. The holes began to heal under her palms and completely stopped bleeding. I looked down at my arm and there was no evidence of the prods ever being there. She then connected the hand held machine into her computer and pulled up a new document. It read 'unidentified creature'. I stared at the screen blankly, my mind whirling. I was inhuman, paranormal and unidentified. What was I? Who was I?
"I think you're more than who you think you are Alex." Halli said, turning back to face away from the screen.
"I think you're the forgotten one." She added.
"The forgotten what? I questioned.
"The forgotten species, the un-dead, the immortal beings." She replied.
The words swirled around my head, un-dead, immortal, forgotten. It couldn't be, I was just Alex. And that's all I ever wanted to be. I didn't want to accept these new labels that had been thrust upon me. I just wanted to be me. Just Alex.
"Please, just return me to my home." I pleaded.
"oh no Alex, this is just the beginning. Finding you has been a miracle. I have been searching hundreds of years to find someone just like me. At first I admit I was a little weary but now, well this is just perfect."
"TAKE ME HOME!" I yelled, again trying to struggle out of the chair.
"This is home." She responded.
"No, it isn't. Home is where my family is!" I proclaimed.
"Alex. Don't you understand. Those humans aren't your family, I am. So many others are out there. Forgotten about, just like you and I. We have to find them." She cried.
"Look if I help you, will you promise to take me back to my home." I said.
"Okay, I promise." She returned.
