Derrick
I went back home in a better mood. Even Kyle noticed it at work. "Did that place over inspire you?" Kyle laughed at me.
I shook my head and flipped through the paperwork.
"Did you meet the owner?"
"Yes." I mumbled out.
Kyle took a bite of his sandwich. "Well? Are they willing to sell?"
I shook my head again. "She made it very clear she didn't want to sell." A faint smile on my face.
"Oh! Was that a smile?" Kyle laughed. "Did we like the owner?"
I clenched my jaw. If only he knew.
"Well? The restaurant?"
"Kyle, I don't want to talk about it."
Kyle shrugged as he finished his sandwich and stared back at the computer.
I read the piece of paper I was after. I saw my name and a line to indicate my signature. It was blank. I grinned. This changes the game completely. I thought I missed a dotted i.
"Actually," I cleared my throat. Kyle looked up at me. "I plan on renegotiating Monday morning."
"There's the brother I know. There's the shark."
I smirked. Yes, I do plan on going for the kill.
The rest of Saturday and Sunday dragged on. There was no point going back on the weekend.
Terra admitted she was the owner and said the owner wasn't in this weekend. The days just seemed so much longer now since I was waiting for Monday morning.
I was back out in the kitchen more, barking orders and Kyle came out to me. "It's so good that you've gotten your motivation back."
I grunted in response.
"I haven't seen this side of you since-" Kyle stopped short.
"It's fine, Kyle."
Kyle looked at his brother in wonderment. "Who are you?" He narrowed his eyes. "Whenever anyone mentions her name, you walk out and have a fit! You never told me what happened."
I had started to walk away, and went back to the office. Kyle shut the door behind himself.
"The way you act, you would think she cheated on you."
Kyle waited for the explosion but I never delivered. "I did." I spoke softly.
Kyle's jaw opened. "What? How? Why would you? Nah, come on. You wouldn't have."
"I did. I screwed up. And she caught me."
"Is that why she left? When did all this happen?"
I felt ashamed. "On our first anniversary."
Kyle slumped on his chair. "Oh man. I wouldn't have guessed." After a brief couple seconds Kyle exploded. "What were you thinking? How could you? I can't even make sense of this! You loved her, passionately. I know you did. Why did you fuck it all up?"
"I didn't meant to." I snapped at him.
"What? Get caught or do it in general?"
"I didn't mean to do it all. I was doing a business deal at home, and the next thing I know, she was on my lap in her underwear kissing me."
"You idiot." Kyle barked at me. "You fucked up."
"You don't think I don't know that?" I yelled at him. "I know I did. I tried several times to talk to her before the divorce. Even through the lawyers, I tried. But she wouldn't talk."
"You're the one that fucked up. Yet she didn't take a single cent."
There were several long silent minutes. "I told her she could have whatever she wanted. She wanted nothing." I sat on my chair and dropped my head on the table. I could feel Kyle about to speak again but I stopped him. "Please don't."
I kept myself in that position for hours, thinking of what happened and trying to figure out how to fix it.
I know she took nothing from me financially, but I knew she would need it.
I thought back to the day I came home to find she had been. I walked in the front door and straight away I saw the photo gone. The photo of us and Gemma. I dropped my briefcase and keys and ran to the bedroom. I had hoped she will come back. That Terra only moved the photo, and she was in the bedroom, wanting to talk.
But when I opened the door, she wasn't there. It was still the same as I left it that morning. I opened her closet and dropped to the ground.
Terra was here. To get her things. She had left some stuff here, but the majority of it was gone. I went to our ensuite and opened the drawers. Her make up, curling wand, hair dryer, gone. I had looked at myself in the mirror and punched my reflection several times. The glass had shattered under my skin and I smeared blood all over the mirror.
I lifted my head when I noticed the place was quiet. I walked out off my office. It was closing time.
I locked up the restaurant and went home. I went to my home office and looked around. I haven't been in here since our anniversary. The place was trashed.
Sighing, I picked up all the books and folders and put the furniture back. I picked up a fallen frame and saw the picture of Terra and me. It was one of our wedding photos. It was Terra's favourite.
I slid my finger over the glass on Terra's face. "I'm sorry." I whispered at the picture. I deserved this.
So Derrick is feeling it, past memories he tried blocking are resurfacing.
What will Terra do next?
What will Derrick do next?
The anticipation...!
