Present Day
"So are you gonna visit your mother while we are in Abingdon?" Leroy asked Tommy as he drove.
"Maybe I don't know this isn't a holiday. I'm going to do a job," answered Tommy, "Perhaps once this case is over."
"Yeah, but she's your mother," said Leroy, "How long has it been since you last saw her?"
Tommy murmured with a shrug. "Like a year. Maybe more."
"Do you know how she's doing?" Leroy shot a glance in Tommy's direction.
"To be honest, not really."
"What about Tyler? How is he doing? He's what like 15 now?"
"16," Tommy corrected. "He seems to be doing okay. He's the star player on his football team," said Tommy, "I believe you Americans call it 'soccer.'"
Leroy chuckled. "Yeah."
"I mean I don't understand why it's not called 'football' don't you rarely ever use your feet in American football? It ought to be called 'handball.'"
Leroy laughed.
"What?" asked Tommy.
"I don't know. Your accent. It's funny."
"You won't believe how many times I've heard that before."
Leroy and Tommy met when he went to present a seminar about profiling at Tommy's college. He's kind of been a surrogate father. A mentor if you will. When the director of the bureau said that Leroy could hand-pick his own team his first person of choice was Tommy. The bureau was reluctant to hire him at first because of his autism and age. They thought he couldn't handle it, but even in spite of the fact that Tommy was young and autistic, Leroy saw that he had a lot of potential and went to bat for him. After he finally convinced the bureau to enlist Tommy as a Federal Agent, they quickly realized that they were tremendously wrong about him.
