Chapter Six
It's been two days since my classmates' visit, two days since I asked to have them leave, and two days since Dr. Rogers had retired. I have a new doctor now, his name is Dr. Anderson and he was a lot younger than most of the doctors I had. But he tries way too hard to connect with us 'youngster' as he calls it. I remember when I was first introduced to him; he had a sparkling smile on his face and not one hint of pity. It was refreshing. Until he opened his mouth. Rather than introducing himself, he started off with a joke. A extremely bad joke.
"Hey, did you hear about the guy who lost his whole left side? He's alright now!" He then burst out laughing, urging us to join him. The nurse on the side giggled-at him rather than the joke-and turned to me, introducing him.
"Sumi, this is Dr. Anderson, he's been transferred here from Kyoto in place of Dr. Rogers, who's retiring. And please don't mind the joke; he's a bit of an idiot."
"Meg! That's mean!" The new doctor placed a hand over his heart and gave the nurse, Meg, a hurt look.
I took a good look at the man who will be taking care of me for the next three weeks and honestly, I prefer him over Dr. Rogers. Yes, Dr. Rogers was nice and sweet but he was quite old. As opposed to Dr. Anderson, as bad as his joke was, who looks like he's the hero of some shoujo manga.
Dr. Anderson may be older than me, but he sure has more life in him. I use to think of all doctors as bitter and bad tempered, after all they had to go through stress, lack of sleep and annoying children, and only here because the job pays well. But Dr. Anderson was different. He seemed to be here because he enjoyed it.
"Good morning little one!" Speak of the devil; Dr. Anderson came barging in, right on time, 8am sharp. This had used to be the nurse but apparently Dr. Anderson 'must be able to take care of patients assigned to him' and they had placed him in charge of everything that had to do with me-I honestly think they just don't want to have to deal with 'the dying child'-.
"Shut up, I'm not little." I grumbled in response.
"Compared to me you are." He said cheekily. "When you reach my age, anyone whose age starts with one seems little."
"What? You're not even that old! You're probably the closest person to my age who still talks to me..." This was our normal morning routine. He would greet me in some way, incorporating whatever adjective he can that relates to something being tiny, then over exaggerates his 'old' age. It was a bit depressing really, because at first it was funny. Now it just seems awfully dull. But I would never say that out loud, because at least he tries. He seems to be the only person around who tries to cheer me up knowing fully well what's going to happen to me. Having him around made me happy. But it doesn't mean anything. Nothing does. He's just doing his job. My situation won't change no matter what. Everything feels so hopeless.
"Hey, kid, you okay?"
"What do you think?"
"Sorry... I was just- Just worried. That's all." I let out a sigh,
"You're a doctor; you're being paid to worry about me."
"I know that, but for you information, I'd still ask how you are even if I wasn't a doctor." Lies.
"Yeah right. Besides, how is all this small talk helping me in any way? Can't you just be like any other doctor and leave right after the check-up?"
"I... Sorry... I just thought that you might be lonely. That you might need a friend."
"I don't need a friend, especially not someone like you. You're an 'old man' and I'm just a kid, there's no way for us to be 'friends'. There's also no way for you to understand how I'm feeling. So why don't you just leave me alone." Although that was supposed to come out angry, it came out empty and lifeless, as if I've wasted all my anger and tears already, as if there were no emotions left I could express.

my favourite chapter. and my least favourite chapter. i cannot express feelings of romance and i just what did i even do ._. so erm i hope you liked my halfass-ed attempt at a dramatic character introduction and sorta cliff hanger. yeah.
**just in case some people don't know, shoujo manga is a genre of japanese comics that are mostly read by teenage girls. if that made sense.
