Chapter Ten
My parents came to visit me again today, my mom to be specific. She came in right after breakfast, stubbornly demanding that she’s going to braid my hair.
“Honey, I haven’t done your hair in so long, allow your mother these simple pleasure in life.” I let out a sigh as I turned to the side. I watched as my mother takes out a comb and a few hair ties from her purse. She came prepared huh?
“Oh Sumi darling, your hair is so pretty, you should take better care of it.” My mother said as she brushed through it, meeting tangles every stroke.
“I fail to see the point in that.” I replied lamely.
“I guess that’s understandable, but it’s a small task and it’ll make your mother happy.” She gave me a small smile, her hands working through my hair. “Tch, what have the nurses been doing? Do they not brush your hair?”
“They do… I just didn’t like it very much, so I told them to stop.”
“What? Why is that?” Because I still have pride.
A perk of dying, I think, is the fact that you are no longer held back by the rules of ‘common curtesy’ or ‘proper social behavior’. People give you a break; they let you be as rude, as bitter as you want. But… It’s quite an empty privilege. Because no matter how angry or upset you act, it doesn’t change the looks of pity, or sorrow from the eyes of others. It doesn’t stop them from judging you, from feeling… Superior to you. If the only privilege I get is as empty as this one, then I don’t want it. I don’t want to spend the last of my days alone, pushing everyone away…
“Sorry I’m late, honey!” My dad came barging in the door, “Allan’s soccer practice ran a bit late.”
“Dear! I was wondering where you were! Come here and tell me if the front looks good.” My mom waves my dad over, and then turned to me, “Sumi honey, if you don’t want the nurse to do it, why don’t you brush it yourself?”
“I don’t want to…” I whined softly
“Well then let the nurse help you!”
“I don’t want to do that either…” My mom giggled,
“My, you’re quite stubborn, aren’t you?”
“Well Susie, she does take after you. So don’t be so hard on the poor girl.” My dad chuckled and said, joining in on our conversation.
“What? I don’t recall being as stubborn as this.”
“Oh really dear? Remember our first date? When yo-” My mom blushed lightly and cut him off,
“Now, now, let’s not get into that… It’s hardly appropriate.”
Sometimes I envy my parents, I can tell they really do love each other, from the way my mom blushes at my dad’s words and the fact that my dad’s voice gets soft only when he talks about mother.
“What was your first date like anyway?” I found myself asking this question, I’m quite surprised; I’ve never actually taken enough interest in my parent’s relationship to care about stuff like their first date. Maybe I just wanted to know more about them, before it’s too late. Or maybe I just… My mind flickered to Dr. Anderson—to his smile and the way his fingers slid across the chess board—, could it be that I’m thinking about dates because... I quickly shook my thoughts away, it’s just some made up fantasy in my head… But a girl can still dream… Can’t she?
My mom’s face turned red just as it finally calmed down at the unexpected question, while my dad looked at me excitedly, if it’s one thing my dad loves to do, it’s to talk. And since I’ve never actually shown any interest in his ‘great romantic conquest’, he must be really happy to be able to talk about it.
“Well sweetheart, I’m really glad you asked! So your mother and I had decided to go to a show at the local opera house, I told her to dress up and boy did she do that. I remember opening the door, looking at her and thinking ‘this is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with’…” I listened along, awing at the story while my mother braided my hair, hiding her blush behind my head.
This would have been a heartwarming family scene, if you didn’t take my circumstance into account.
