Chapter Thirteen
Before Dr. Anderson could give me a reaction to my wish, he was whisked away by a nurse who needed him for ‘disclosed’ reasons.
I sat alone in my hospital room, staring at the clock on the wall. Tick. Tock. But I don’t want to continue staring. Clock will only make a melancholy, I don’t want to know how much time I’m spending here. I just want everything to hurry up, to fast forward, and to end as soon as possible.
“Sumi!” I turned to face the curtains, realizing that it was some of the people from that meeting. Kate and glasses boy.
“Erm… Hi?” I greeted back awkwardly. It’s been quite long since I’ve talked to people my age.
“Remember me? I’m Kate.” She said cheerfully.
“Yeah… I remember…” I sound dead compared to the tone Kate was using.
“And I’m Jack.” The glasses boy, Jack, cut in. “So… We need your help.” I see Kate slap Jack lightly on the shoulders,
“Quite being so impatient!” Kate smiled sheepishly and turned back to me, “So you know about Sabrina getting fired right?”
“Yeah…?”
“Do you know why she… Did what she did?” Kate’s smile dropped, “She did it for us.”
“What?” I looked at her, the confused obvious in my voice.
“She’d use the money to buy us what we wanted but couldn’t have.” That actually wasn’t as much of a surprise; I can see Sabrina as that kind of person. “She got me a book.”
“Can’t your parents buy you that?” I asked,
“Well yes, but it’s a romance story. My parents hated for me to come close to this type of books, apparently its ‘inappropriate’ for people my age.” Kate answered, “They’re really strict with stuff like this.”
“Anyway, enough about your family Kate, can we get on with it.” Jack cut in, “So, we want to play a prank on the lady who caught Sabrina and obviously overreacted.” I thought back to my bucket list, kill two birds with one stone.
“Oooh, sounds fun. Do proceed.”
“I knew she’d be in!” Kate have-fived Jack and Jack turned to me excitedly. “Okay, so what we’re going to do wrap the keyboard to her computer with plastic wrap. Many layers of plastic wrap.” I laughed at their prank, that’s one of the oldest things in the book.
“Well, I have an idea if you guys would like to hear it.” Telling from the excited glint in their eyes, they want me to say it, “Well, we can tape an air horn to the bottom of her chair, since her chair is the type that moves down automatically if weight is placed on it.”
“That is…” Kate began,
“Genius!” Jack finished, then he continued, “Now you must be wondering what part you’re playing in this. You have to distract her while we do this.”
“Distract her?” I asked,
“Yeah, she’s the type that won’t ever leave her desk, but if a patient is calling out, asking for help, she can’t just ignore it. And don’t worry, I asked Dr. Anderson and he’s in on this as well.” I thought back to what he said this morning. Well, I’m not quite sure about the prank thing but I’m pretty sure if it’s nothing major, I can help it happen.
Kate and Jack helped me onto the wheelchair and brought me to the hallway leading to the reception desk. They sneaked off to the other side of the desk before giving me a thumbs up.
“Ah!” I yelled out, I saw the lady turn towards the sound, her eyes drifted over to me. “I, someone, please.” I made sure to make eye contact with her while I said this; the result was satisfying as she left the desk to tend to me.
“Are you alright?” She asked as she got to where I was.
“No, I… My arms hurt. My legs too, do… Do you think you can help me back to my room?” I held on to one of my arms, twitching a little to add to the effect.
“Yeah, I’ll call someone over.” I looked behind her to see Kate and Jack working vigorously on the chair.
“No wait,” I held on to her, “Ah, I’m sorry, it just really hurts.” I clenched the corner of her uniform, making her think I was clenching in pain, but really, I just wanted to ruin a part of her uniform for getting rid of Sabrina’s. I raised my head and saw Kate and Jack run towards me,
“Sumi! Are you okay?” Kate asked, she turned to the nurse, “It’s okay Miss, if you’re too busy we’ll help her back to her room.” The lady smiled at Kate,
“If you’re sure you’ll be okay.”
“Yeah, I feel a lot better now, thank you.” Kate then pushed me along; it wasn’t long before the horn’s heard.
We turned around to find the lady on the ground, her face scared and looking around for the source of the sound. When she found none, she sat down again, just to jump up in shock as it happened again. We let out a small giggle and entered the elevator, frantically clicking the close elevator door button so she wouldn’t catch us laughing.
