Chapter Twelve
“Hey Dr. Anderson?” I asked him when he walked into the room in the morning.
“Yes, kid?”
“Can you help me?”
“With what?”
“I’m making a bucket list.” Dr. Anderson held back an amused chuckle,
“Isn’t it a little late for that?” I guess he had a point; there wasn’t much that I could do now that I’m stuck in this condition. My mind drifted to before… This all happened.
“Hurry up slowpoke! Or you’re going to be late!”
“What? I’m not a slowpoke, you’re just going way to fast!” I let out a laugh and pedaled faster, determined not to let him catch up to me.
“What? All I’m hearing is ‘I can’t bike faster than a girl; I’m such a pathetic excuse for a guy.’”
“No! I’m didn’t day that! You-You’re just being too reckless.” Kurita sounded out of breath behind me.
“And you’re just being a scaredy cat! Scaredy cat Kurita~” I sang out.
“Fine whatever, if you hit a rock and fall into a ditch or something. Don’t expect me to help you, I’ll just be on the side, laughing at you!”
Memories… My mind’s now filled with them. I used to cycle everywhere, out to the fields, to the pool. I loved being outside. I remember when my skin got tanned from being outside so much, now my skin’s white again, due to the lack of sunlight in the suffocating hospital room. I also remember when I use to catch cicadas with Kurita, I still have those dried cicada shells in an old shoe box in the closet of my room. But it’s not like I’ll ever see it again.
I realized how much I missed my old life, missed all the water pistol fights, missed the forest we’d often go ‘exploring’ in, missed us sitting underneath that big old tree you’d find in the middle of the forest. We didn’t even have to talk; we’d just focus on the sound of the cicadas, the sunlight crashing through small gaps in the leaves, the flowers that’d grow around the tree. Missed the sound of laughter echoing throughout the forest… Because now, everything’s changed, there’s no longer any laughter, no longer any races to see who gets to school first, no more water fights, no more snowball fights… There’s only this room, these empty memories, me… And Dr. Anderson.
“Hey. Hey. Kid? You there?” Dr. Anderson waved his hands in my face, I blinked and realized I was zoning out.
“Sorry, erm,” I paused, looking down in the small notepad in my hands I realized that we were talking about the bucket list. “It’s not really a bucket list… It’s more of a baby bucket list.”
“A baby bucket list?” Dr. Anderson looked at me confused,
“Yeah, it’s really just small things I’d like to do before you know my ultimate end.”
“Ahhhh, so what have you got on your list so far?” I was tempted to just give him the notepad so he could read it off, but I rather not as I have some embarrassing ones I’m fine with him not knowing.
“One, say a swear word in front of an adult. Two, hold- Wait I mean, play a prank on someone. Three…” I paused, realizing what I was just about to read. “That’s all.” Dr. Anderson looked at me suspiciously.
“Well, technically I am an adult so you could swear now and get that over with.” I thought about what he had said and it did make sense.
“Good point haha. Fuck.”
“C’mon kid. You can do better than that!” He encouraged.
“Are you sure you’re an adult? Normally they don’t encourage this kind of ‘language’.” He laughed at that but didn’t reply. Fine then.
“Motherfucker. Shit. You’re such a pussy…” I continued on, trying to think of as many cuss words as possible. I heard a stifled laughed from Dr. Anderson.
“What?” I looked at him annoyed.
“You’re so adorable, haha, it’s just so unlike you but also like you at the same time.”
“What does that even mean?”
“It’s just that bad words don’t look like they fit into your vocabulary, but at the same time, the fact that you can’t incorporate it to your everyday speech and is only able to say them out loud for the sake of saying them is just so… You.”
“Well it’s not my fault I’m usually always surrounded by adults that aren’t as lenient as you.” I replied, slightly annoyed by what he had said.
“Well, I’m not quite sure about the prank thing but I’m pretty sure if it’s nothing major, I can help it happen.” He gave me a small smile before continuing, “Now tell me, what was the third thing you wanted to do but refuse to tell me.”
“I… It’s nothing.” I said quickly. Too quickly.
“That doesn’t sound like nothing to me.” He teased.
“P… Promise you won’t laugh?” I hesitantly asked, debating in my head whether or not it’s a good idea.
“I won’t. I promise.”
“Fine.” I began, “I want to be kissed… Under the cherry blossoms.”
