Madeline's POV

I hold my iPod up so I'm filming myself. I take deep breath and sing:

"🎶Even if the stars and moon collide

I never want you back into my life

You can take your words and all your lies

Oh, oh, oh, I really don't care!🎶"

I take my thumb off of the recording button and smile. I had just enough time to finish.

I post song covers on Instagram, if you were wondering. It's difficult to cram a lot of the song into a 15 second clip, but I've managed to pull it off pretty well. I post the video and wait for a little bit. Likes don't usually come two seconds after I post.

Soon enough though, I get a like, then 2, then 10, then 20. It's not very common for me to get more than 25 or 26 likes. I have about 200 followers, but only a little more than a tenth of them are active.

I sigh and place my iPod down on my desk beside me. It lights up with the occasional "ur so good!" but I ignore it. I look around at my walls. They're covered in posters, so many that you can barely see the ugly kelp-colored wallpaper behind it.

I look right at my favorite one. It's of 5 Seconds of Summer, 5SOS for short. They're one of my favorite groups. I only got into them a few months ago, but they're easy to fall in love with. Luke, Calum, Michael, Ashton. Their names roll off my tongue in such a way that it's easier to say them than any other word in my vocabulary. Most of my covers are of them. I share a birthday with Luke, too. Same day, same year. It's a little freaky.

Suddenly, I get an idea. I grab my iPod up again, going on Instagram. I go to the Direct Message section, and tap on "send". I go into my gallery and pick out one of my 5SOS covers (Disconnected) and find myself writing a lengthy comment to go along with it. Before I know it, I've sent a DM to the 5SOS boys.

"What the hell did I just do?" I ask myself out loud.

Oh well. It's not like they'll ever see it anyway. They're probably way too busy.

Ashton's POV

I'm scrolling through my Instagram feed randomly when I see that I have yet another DM. I roll my eyes a little. Probably another person asking for for a follow back.

I open it up and I'm surprised to see it's a video. I put in an ear bud and press play, and the words and tune that Calum had written floods through.

"🎶I like the summer rain,

I like the sounds you make

We put the world away

We get so disconnected!🎶"

My eyes widen for a moment.

"Woah, Ash, what's up?" Calum asks from across the dressing room (we've already performed, but we're waiting to go back to the bus for a little bit).

"Listen to this." I pull my headphones out of my phone and play the video again.

"Wow! Who is that?" Calum asks, his own eyes wide as well.

"Some girl named Madeline. Here, I'll read her caption:

"'I'm so sorry to bother you, I know you're all very busy. I do covers on my account. Most of them are of you guys. ("Aw," Calum smiles.) You guys have inspired me to come out of my shell and sing more openly in front of people. I'm not asking for a follow or anything like that, but if you would be able to take a little time out of your day to check out my account, it would mean the world to me.'

"She sent it to you and the other boys, too. We should check out some of her covers," I suggest, and Calum nods just as Luke and Michael enter.

"Some of who's covers?" Luke asks, plopping down next to Calum.

"This girl, Madeline. She DMed us on Instagram. You should check it out," Calum replies, taking out his own phone.

Michael and Luke listen to it, and both of them look dumbfounded when they're done.

"She's amazing!" Michael exclaims after a silent minute.

"She is! I went and liked all of her videos and stuff, too," I tell them. "She covered us a lot. She must be a huge fan!"

"I'm going to DM her back," Luke says.

"Once we get back to the bus. It's getting late, come on. The first Idaho show is tomorrow," Calum reminds us.

We walk back down to the bus and start goofing off, except Luke, who seems to be absorbed in something on his phone.

"I'm going to bed, lads," I tell them finally, after about an hour of messing around. They all say goodnight and do the same, and I'm already really excited about tomorrow, even though I'm not quite sure why.
