Madeline's POV
Weirdly enough, the next month goes fine. Riley and I have bonded a bit, and I'm nowhere near scared of her anymore.
Though the nightmares don't stop.
"Luke!"
Riley's trial month is almost up, and she's still in the guest room. Luke bolts awake beside me and looks over at me with wide eyes.
"What happened this time?"
"Same as always," I lie. "But it isn't Riley anymore."
"Who is it?"
I rub my forehead, still trying to comprehend what happened.
"Mad? Tell me, who is it now?"
"Helena. My friend from America, remember? She picked up the phone that one time, and she yelled at me for not telling her I had your number."
He smirks a little at the memory from months ago, then glances back at me. "Why her? When's the last time you even talked to her?"
"I can't even remember. I think it was our birthday. I think. She hasn't texted me or anything. I don't know why it would be her."
I'm lying through my teeth. The last time the two of us spoke was a week ago. She kept bragging about her boyfriend, Patrick, my former middle school crush. I eventually got tired of it and hung up on her, but guilt is eating me alive for some reason.
Also, the dream changed quite a bit. Yes, Helena was warning me that Luke would forget all about me, but that wasn't all. After she finished with that, two boys appeared behind her. They had both looked very familiar. One of them was too familiar.
Patrick and Luke stood behind her, one at each shoulder. After they appeared, Luke pulled her close to him and...they started making out. Patrick just sort of stared at me threateningly, ignoring the fact that his girlfriend was eating another guy's face off.
That's when I woke up.
"Mad, are you sure you're telling me everything? You don't usually wake up sweating," Luke acknowledges, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"I'm fine," I tell him. "Im going to get a glass of water. I'll be back in a minute."
He watches me as I slip out of the bed and pad over to the door, leaving him.
"Why did you scream?"
I whirl around, nearly spilling the water out of my cup.
"Oh, Riley, it's just you."
"Maddie, why did you scream?" Luke's cousin crosses her arms over her chest, looking at me expectantly.
"It's nothing, don't worry about it. Go back to bed. It's 3 in the morning."
"I am going to worry about you, Maddie. I've heard you almost every night I've been here. What's wrong?"
She sits on a stool next to the island and pats the seat next to her, telling me to sit down. I sigh, but I follow her example.
"It's really nothing, Riles, I just have nightmares sometimes."
"I don't believe you."
I smile softly. Ah, those words bring back memories. Not good memories, but memories.
"Fine. I keep having this reoccurring nightmare of a girl telling me that everything is going to change. That everyone is going to forget me. Especially Luke." I hear my voice wavering.
"You aren't telling me everything," she pushes me further.
Like I said, we bonded a lot.
"Alright. The girl was my former best friend and, after she finished giving me the usual prediction this time, she kind of...started making out with Luke."
"Ew!"
"While her boyfriend and my former crush watched."
"EW!"
"Yeah." I stare at my glass.
"Did you tell Luke all of this already?"
"Yes. Well, maybe not the second bit."
Riley groans.
"Maddie, you've got to be honest with him and tell him everything! He's your boyfriend! He knows it's a dream, he won't mind."
"I can't though, he's getting so protective of me lately!" I complain, then lower my voice slightly. "He's scared of how all of this is affecting me."
"What do you mean by 'all of this'? Because I have a feeling you aren't only talking about the dreams anymore."
I bite my lip. "He'll kill me if I tell you."
She laughs. "He's my cousin. I won't let him kill you. Besides, you and I both know he's a softie. Come on, what's the problem?"
"I feel like he should be the one to tell you, Riles."
"But he most likely won't. I know that you guys talk about me behind my back. He won't tell me anything personally," she says, shaking her head.
"Riley, I-"
"Fine, don't tell me. Keep more secrets from me. I'm sorry if I haven't proven myself to you yet," she says bitterly, then claps a hand over her mouth.
"You heard that? At the burger place?"
She slowly removes her hand from over her lips, then shakes her head.
"Calum sort of told me. He's been helping me with stuff. I guess I've just sort of ruined his work, though."
I pat her gently on the back. "I won't tell anyone. We should go back to bed. It's nice having these 'girl talks'. We should have them more often."
I get up to go back to bed, back to Luke, but she stops me.
"You still haven't told me what 'all of this' is."
"Riley, I really don't think I should be the one to tell you if you don't know. Go back to bed, okay?"
She looks a little cross for a moment, then sighs and nods, pushing past me and going back down the hall to her room.
I pull Luke's door shut behind me quietly, so I don't wake him. Unfortunately, it seems he hasn't gone back to sleep at all.
"What took so long?" he demands in whispers.
"Riley woke up, too. She was just asking me about my dream."
"What did you tell her?"
"The same stuff I told you." There. That wasn't a complete lie.
He looks at me with doubt, but he shrugs it off and pulls me to the bed. Then he tells me softly, "I want them to get better for you. But while I'm right here, they only seem to be getting worse."
I can't help but think that he's right.
*********************************
Hey guys! This was kind of a filler chapter, and I know that there wasn't a whole lot of stuff going on in it, but Helena's back! I think she'll have more of a major role from now on, so stay tuned!
Also, I'm thinking that this story may be drawing to a close. I don't know quite how long it will take me, but no worries, I have a sequel planned!
