A few hours later, Evan walked into the house with his Dad's Jace and Ben and Evan's twin sister Chloe. I tried not to seem nervous, but after the failure today had been I knew I was as transparent as clear glass.
It had been years since I'd seen any of them, so it was almost like meeting again for the first time.
I knew the OG's would hate to admit it, but it was becoming clearer and clearer that the patchwork that had once held us all together just didn't exist anymore.
Once the 'introductions' were over Scarlett led us into the dining room.
I tried to get away from Evan, desperate to gloss over the fact I was working for him, but it seemed as though my hopes were to be ignored. Scarlett sat me beside him.
"I'm surprised you didn't try and get out of this after today." I mumbled. "I'm sure I'm the last person you want to see."
I felt Evan's gaze rest on me, his grew closer.
"What makes you think I didn't."
"Fair point." I replied. "Well since whatever you tried didn't work, I'll do you a solid favour and pretend your not here then."
I heard Evan's breathing quicken, I knew he wanted to say something, but he held back.
Throughout the dinner there wasn't much time for us to directly converse, which was a blessing in itself. The conversation flowed despite the thick tension between Evan and I. Ben and Jace talked about their trip to Paris, which led to Xavier telling a story about the time Going Nowhere went there as part of their world tour when Scarlett was surrogate for Jace and Ben. She'd had to stay behind because she was due with the twins. Jace was away from home and scarlett went into labour early. They ended up pausing the concert so Jace could skype call in. He was so excited that with Ben's blessing he shared a picture of them with the world then and there.
Sometimes I'd forgotten that the origins of Evan's birth were similar to my own, slightly left of centre.
After dinner Jace, Ben and Chloe left. Evan hung behind he pulled his keys from his pocket and walked to the door.
"Everything okay?" Scarlett asked softly as she sided up next to Evan. Evan looked down at her and nodded before turning his attention toward me.
"I was wondering if Ace would like to come for a ride." He murmured.
I held back the frown that was begging to surface because I knew it would cause questions that I didn't know how to answer. Instead I swallowed my pride and smiled.
"Sure."
Evan raised his eyebrows and bit back a smile. We gestured to the still open door and waited for me to walk toward it.
I could feel Scarlett's gaze on me as I walked, and I knew that she was probably reading too much into it, that the questions I had avoided by not frowning I'd just caused anyway by agreeing. Once we were outside and the door was closed I heard Evan quicken his footsteps so that he was alongside me as we walked down the path.
"You can't stand me." I mused as we walked. "So please tell me why you require my company."
"I thought we could start over." Evan exclaimed as he walked around to the passengers door of his car and opened it for me. "Today was difficult, but it was your first day. I'd have been more worried if nothing had gone wrong."
My eyes narrowed, Evan had practically given me the silent treatment all day at work after my mistake. Why now had he suddenly had a change of heart.
