Running down corridors, through automatic doors. Got to get to you, got to see this through. I see hope is here in a plastic box, I've seen Christmas lights reflect in your eyes.
He can feel his heart pounding as he rushes into the hospital followed by both Joe and Sophie. It's a little after 3am and they've just landed back in LA after leaving North Carolina mid-show. This isn't how it was supposed to be, this wasn't how they planned it. He was supposed to be here, right by her side on what should've been one of the happiest days of both their lives but instead he was in a different state whilst she went through most of it on her own.
'Hi, my wife was admitted a few hours ago.' Nick says leaning on the reception desk as Joe places his hand on his shoulder.
'Okay. Can I have your wife's name?' The receptionist asks.
'Demetria Jonas.' Nick replies watching as she types it into the computer infront of her.
'Ah, here she is. Your wife is currently in recovery. I will get Dr Robbins to come out and explain to you what's happened, okay?' The receptionist says and Nick nods his head.
'You can take a seat in the family room if you'd like some privacy.' The receptionist adds and Joe nods his head. He guides Nick over to the family room and closes the door behind them.
'They'll be fine, Nick.' Joe says and Nick shakes his head.
'We don't know that.' He replies quietly as he begins to pace around the room. What feels like hours later, but in reality is only around ten minutes, a blonde doctor walks in carrying a clipboard.
'Mr Jonas?' She asks and Nick instantly turns to face her.
'How is she?' He asks.
'Why don't we take a seat?' Dr Robbins suggests causing Nick to sigh. Reluctantly he sits down and feels tears welling in his eyes as Dr Robbins sits opposite him.
'As you know your wife was admitted earlier after she showed signs of premature labour. Unfortunately we were unable to stop labour and we had to perform an emergency caesarean section in an attempt to save both your wife and your unborn baby's life.' Dr Robbins explains.
'Are they okay?' Nick asks.
'Your wife appears to be recovering well; we're just about to move her into a room where she'll spend the remainder of her stay. Did you know the gender of your baby?' Dr Robbins asks and Nick shakes his head.
'Would you like to know?' Dr Robbins adds and Nick nods his head.
'You've got a baby boy. He's currently being looked after in the NICU and is most likely to spend at least a few months in hospital. At the moment he's getting some help with his breathing and keeping his temperature up.' Dr Robbins explains.
'C-Can I see Demi?' Nick asks and Dr Robbins nods her head.
'Of course you can.' She replies. She shows Nick to the room where Demi has just been moved to and let's them know she's right outside if they need her.
'I'm so sorry I wasn't here, Dems.' He says softly as he sits down next to the bed and reaches out for his hand.
'You weren't to know monkey would decide to come ten weeks early... Have you seen the baby yet?' She asks and he shakes his head.
'No.' He replies.
'I didn't get to see... I don't even know if we have a son or a daughter.' She mumbles glancing down at her stomach which just a few hours ago was home to their beautiful baby.
'A son, we've got a son.' He says watching tears fill her eyes.
'A boy? Millie is going to be so happy.' She replies and he nods his head.
'She's got a little brother.' He says softly.
****
'He's so little.' Demi says quietly as she sits in a wheelchair in front of the incubator containing her son. Taking a deep breath Nick places his hands on Demi's shoulders and kisses the top of her head whilst watching the reflection of the Christmas lights on the incubator.
'I know. I'm sure the nurse said he weighed 2.9 pounds.' Nick replies as Demi reaches her hand forward and rests it on the incubator.
'I was looking at names earlier and I think we should name him Carlin... It is Irish for little champion.' She says glancing back at Nick who nods his head.
'I think that's perfect.' He replies.
'This feels so unnatural... With Millie I was able to pick her up and snuggle her, I can't pick him up.' Demi mumbles as tears fill her eyes.
'Hey, look at me. This is only for a little while. Once he's bigger and stronger you'll be able to cuddle him all day long. He just needs a little help but he'll be fine.' Nick says.
