Sorry for not updating last week. I had exams and it was hectic. But to make up for it I'll do A DOUBLE UPDATE! WARNING there's Marecal in this chapter but it's needed for the plot.

Every night I shared a bed with Cal it felt like I was betraying Maven. The first night we spent at Notch I had dreamed that this was all another plan to kill me. That Elara set her son up to this and I was to be killed the moment I stepped foot in Whitefire. Cal offered me the option of staying with him after he heard my screams from that night. I wasn't keen on the idea, but I didn't need Cal suspecting something was off with me. We never did anything, and it's not like I'd let him, but everyone acted like we did. They acted as if I betrayed the Reds by bedding a Sliver, but who am I to blame them, I'm in love with the king.

"Mare you need to eat," Cal reminded me.

I didn't think Cal would be back this early from training. Normally I would've gone with him, but I wasn't feeling up to it today. I could tell from the smell that followed him that he was drenched with sweat, probably from fighting a Nymph.

"I'll get to it," I said not bothering to look up from my rummaging.

"What are you doing?" He asked wrapping his arms around my neck.

It surprised me at first but eventually I melted into his arms with a sigh, "Just looking for something."

"Well I found what I was looking for," he whispered into my ear.

Shivers went down my spine, "What?" I breathed.

"You," he spun me around and grabbed my hands. His thumb fell over my ring.

"What's this?" He asked, his temperature slowly rising.

"It's a ring Cal," I tried to keep my voice steady.

"I know that Mare!" He said trying to keep his temper. "It's just... why is it on your ring finger?'' He seamed saddened.

My mind frantically searched for some kind of excuse. If Cal found out that I was once again engaged to his brother, not only would he feel betrayed, but he wouldn't hold back on me. I was working with the enemy and Cal wouldn't hesitate to end me here and now. We agreed not to make stupid decisions because of each other, and Cal would be the one to uphold that.

"This ring represents my three brothers," I answer running my finger over each of the three stones, "It reminds me that I am both Red and Silver. And most importantly it represents what I'm fighting for." Lying to Cal was something I could never do, so I told him the truth.

"Mare you never answered my question," Cal starts.

"And I wear it on my wedding finger because I am married to my cause," I finished.

Cal took a minute before replying, a thoughtful expression on his face, "Mare I want that ring to mean so much more."

"What are you trying to say?"

"I want this ring to be a promise that after this is all over that you'll still love me. That we'll get married and have a life rid of my brother and the Guard," Cal's eyes met mine, "Mare promise me a future with you?"

In that moment I forget what the ring really means. I forget how I feel for Maven and all the promises I've made to him. I pulled Cal towards me and pressed my lips on his. Cal in turn backs me against the the wall to deepen the kiss. It was nothing like the kiss I shared with his brother back at Tuck. Instead of a controlled and harmonic kiss, it was sloppy and full of lust. For few seconds I imagined that we were back at Whitefire when Cal taught me to dance, but then I remembered we weren't. I remembered who I was engaged to and why I couldn't let this happen.
