Chapter Eleven
A Cloak, Black and Zach
Perched atop the doorway, I rested. My eyes roamed down below, searching for something that hadn't came yet. I'd been waiting for about ten minutes and since then the scenery had not been altered. On a normal break-into-the-castle day, I would have began a scheme. I would have made myself known.
Today was not a normal break-into-the-castle day. (Technically it was night.)
No plans, no takeover, no backup. Herman was waiting outside for when I needed a ride, but wasn't really a part of this. (I told him I could handle this on my own.) Heck, even my outfit was completely different!
Instead of my normal blue attire, my wardrobe coated itself black. Tall black boots, raven pants and a long sleeve (if you guessed black, you were correct!) blouse were draped over my figure. Topping off my newly edgy look was a cloak- for ominous swishing purposes, obviously. My red hair contrasted the night too much, and for that it had been pulled back into a bun, tucked underneath the velvety hood of the cloak.
The only thing that stayed was the glittering black crown. I wore it like a prized trophy. While it should have been a giant target, it too hid under the cloak.
I steeled myself as steps echoed across a nearby room, not too far from where I sat. The sound grew closer, leaving me to wonder if this was someone's poorly-executed attempt at sneaking around. Amidst the room barely lit -except from the light of the moon- a looming shadow emerged. Its owner appeared soon after.
He stopped in the center of the room silently. Oblivious to my presence, he waited for something. Hoping I assumed correctly, that something was likely me.
"May I ask if you're another faceless guard?" I questioned. A coy smile nestled upon my features the second his head snapped around to face me.
He gave a nod. His face didn't show fear being near a Sorceress, but rather an odd content. "I may very well be. You, on the other hand, are a different story. You've become the talk of the town; punching the prince the way you did. The news has spread so much like wildfire, I wouldn't be surprised if it reached past this kingdom. It was quite a spectacle." He let out a laugh.
Curiously and a bit more trusting, I hopped off my perch to face him directly. I cut to the chase. "What did you call me here for?"
Before I could count to one internally, he blurted, "Zachary." When he was met with confusion, he explained. "You likely don't remember me, but awhile back you asked for my name. It's Zachary, but please call me Zach."
Then it clicked.
That's what I knew him from.
He kept growling at me. Then I asked for his name, to which he replied with a very harsh no. I saved him after he got stabbed
The guard who complained about the hole earlier- the one I bumped into. He put the note in my pocket then.
That was all Zach.
It made sense now, at least a little. Still...
"What do you hope to gain, Zach? That whole situation not sit well with you and wanted to make amends? Because really, it wasn't that big of a deal. It's all fine so-"
"You aren't a fan of Prince Brice, or royal family. I don't know if I want them on the throne," he began.
Already, I was liking what was coming out of his mouth.
"What reason do you have for wanting a change in monarchs? I don't mean that they're terrible rulers. What is your personal drive for this?" Zach asked.
Slightly taken aback, my mouth opened and closed like a fish a few times before answering honestly, "Well, Sorceresses and Sorcerers have been exiled in this kingdom without a proper reason. And... they murdered my father for that nonexistent reason. Why? What are you going to do?"
Determination swelled upon Zach's face. "Your takeover team seems a little small. I think you may need a new member. I think a spy sounds interesting. I guess what I'm trying to ask is; any chance you're looking for a double agent?"
Author's Note! (I don't usually do this because it always makes me feel oddly unprofessional. Also, there's like two of you.) I am going to ask you guys! What's your opinion on entering this story in the Wattys?
