CHAPTER 17
Ivy's POV:
They were going to drive around forever and the conversation would have become intolerable for her if she had not decided to stop them where they were. Ivy had said more than she expected herself to, she was unfathomably beginning to lose control of herself around Harry. They were walking in Darling Harbor and Harry was trying to look around the foreign place without being detected. The many entertainers spread out at different intervals excited him but Ivy had to remind him who he was and the importance of him staying out of the public eye. He looked fascinated by the place overflowing with energy, tourists and Australian culture.
"So this is your first time being here?" she asked him as they were walking by the water- distancing themselves from people- that was dotted with boats and ferries. "My first time being in Darling Harbor, yes," he answered, "this place is great, but are we just going to walk around the whole time?"
"No, I thought we could walk till we see something that interests us and go there, otherwise we would've been driving for a long time with nothing interesting in sight," she clarified.
"I wouldn't mind, I like our conversations," Harry stated making Ivy blush and turn her head away to look out at the water so that he would not notice. "Most people don't find me very interesting to talk to," she said looking up at him.
He had put on a 'disguise' as he called it but he was only really wearing a Fedora hat and black glasses which looked entirely unfashionable together, even she knew that. He looked hilarious and when she laughed at his appearance he smiled and twirled for her in the parking lot he had parked his car in. She had stopped giggling after the second twirl and he discontinued, took his glasses off and said, "don't stop, I like your laugh." His green eyes stood out even in the dim lighting and the curls that escaped the grasp of his hat looked soft. The smile that she usually perceived as calming turned into a smile that made her want to experiment with something she had never experienced before. She felt her face redden with heat and her arms fill with goose bumps.
She did not know how she survived that and she had to stop herself from having these odd feelings and desires. She knew for a fact that it would not be fair to both of them for their relationship to grow to a status higher than friends.
"How many people is that roughly?" he questioned.
"Everyone; well except my best friend Tina. And now you unexpectedly," she replied.
"Those people are crazy, or maybe Tina and I are, but that doesn't change the fact that I find you very interesting," he affirmed. He had to end the way he kept complimenting her otherwise she would start to feel anxious about the way she acted around him, or if the next thing she said was going to affect his image of her, or if he was being truthful. Stop it she thought stop over analysing everything and just be you for once, maybe people need to start accepting you and you need to stop trying to shape yourself to fit other people's images of you to please them. Maybe you need to give people a chance to accept you.
"Yoohoo," Harry waved his hand in front of Ivy's eyes relieving her of her endless thoughts and contemplation. "Sorry she said, I was just... sometimes I just get caught up in here," she tapped the side of her head with her finger. "Tina usually complains about that," she added smiling up at him to lighten the mood.
"See, there's something interesting about you," he said looking directly ahead at the people and shops they were passing as if thinking aloud, "what were you caught up in this time if you don't mind me asking?" They were not walking on the wooden platform by the water anymore, but they stayed as far away as possible from people.
She took a deep breath, she was either going to stumble back behind her wall or start taking it down brick by brick.
"I was thinking that maybe people didn't find me interesting because I didn't give them the opportunity to. I was thinking that maybe I should give people the opportunity to have a conversation with me." The first brick was taken off the wall.
"Well I'm glad you came to that realisation because people are seriously missing out here," Harry said with enthusiasm and Ivy giggled. She was filled with relief with the knowledge that Harry did not push her to say more than she wanted to and listened to her inner thoughts with complete and honest attention. But old habits die hard and she had to ask, "Harry, are you sure I'm not bothering you with my stupid problems and ruining what could have been an awesome trip around Sydney?"
Harry's POV:
The way his name sounded coming out of her lips was mesmerizing. It took him a second before he replied, his previous brief dazed moment making him completely sure of his answer, "Yes, I'm sure, it's an absolute delight to have you here with me." She stopped playing with her fingers, which he knew now was a sign of when she said something unsure of how it would be received, like when she revealed her thoughts to him. He felt accomplished but not entirely, he needed to understand her better and wanted to show her that being herself was the greatest thing ever; that she was great.
She smiled up at him, the smile he was starting to see more frequently and realised he could not get enough of. "How long has it been since you've been to the zoo?" she asked. He was confused, "too long to even remember."
"Great me neither. That's a place that interests us both?" she questioned and he saw the zoo coming into view. "Yes, but it'll be harder to stay away from people in there," he pointed out. He took three more steps before he realised her presence near him was missing. He turned around and saw her standing there holding the cuffs of the sleeves of her cardigan in her hands firmly. "Come here," she said and bit the side of her lip.
He walked back and stood in front of her. She moved closer to him, closer than he thought she had the courage to. He felt her warmth and wanted to wrap his arms around her but he restrained himself from doing so. She raised her hands up to his hair, her lip still in between her teeth in concentration and tucked the escaping curls under his hat so that none of them poked out he guessed.
He stared at her intently as she hid the last locks and moved away making him miss her close company. "There," she said smiling, "It's not the best look for you but now I'm sure people won't recognize you without your curls."
"I like your smart self," he said casually and grinned; although he wanted to say much more. But he knew she was not the type of girl to go around trusting random people so he suppressed the need to say: I like your nervous self, your happy self, your humorous self, I like you.
