"Jake is gonna be here in any minute now so please dad, be nice to him!"
"Okay." Dad sighs. I can see he is nervous, but he is trying to hide it as best as he can.
Then I hear knock on the door.
"Be nice!" I say before I go open the door.
"I'm super nervous." Are Jakes first words when I open the door for him. He wipes his sweaty hands onto his black jeans and comes in.
"I don't want him to hate me!" He whispers and hugs me quickly.
"He already hates you, so don't worry!" I chuckle.
"Fuck Em..." He says and looks at me with his worried eyes.
"I'm kidding. Just relax, and remember to breathe. Dad is nervous too." I whisper.
"Oh."
We walk to the kitchen where mom is setting the table and dad stands in front of the counter cleaning his glasses.
"Hey Jake!" Mom smiles.
"Hey." Jake answers and looks at my dad.
"Im Charles Franco. Emily's father, pleasure to meet you!" Dad says and offers his hand to Jake.
"Jacob Miller." Jake says and shakes dad's hand. They have seen each many times before but Dad just wanted to make this feel more official... And more awkward to be honest.
Mom and I are looking at each other, then the boys, and each other again. We can clearly feel the tension between them and I can see how dad does not enjoy this situation. Jake and dad are still shaking each other's hands and staring each other without saying anything.
"Dinner's ready." Mom says breaking the moment.
"Oh. Great." Dad says and goes to his seat.
Jake sits next to me and I almost can hear his heart racing in his chest.
"Breathe." I whisper and he takes a deep breath.
"I actually didn't know that your first name is Jacob." Dad says.
"No one really uses the name. I've been just Jake my whole life."
"Interesting."
"Why don't you tell us something about yourself?"
"Um. I'm almost 19 years old and I'm graduating from high school a little bit later than others in my age." Jake says nervously.
"What are your future plans?"
"I really don't know. I'm not even sure what I should study if I would study something, I'm not that interested about anything."
"Well you are still young, you have plenty of time to figure out what you wanna do." Dad says and I kinda get confused because he has always pressured me to figure out what I want as soon as possible.
"What about your family?"
"I live with my mom and 7 year old sister, Abby. My mom, Chelsea, is a single mom and she works in a hospital as a nurse."
"Chelsea Collings?"
"Yeah?"
"I actually know her."
"Oh."
"I'm a doctor and I see her every once in awhile in the hospital, nice lady." Dad smiles.
"Oh, right." Jake smiles.
"What about your father?" Dad asks.
"He left when Abby was born."
"Shit. I'm sorry. Somehow I just didn't think that Earl must have been your father."
"Yeah."
"I apologize."
"It's fine. It was really long time ago."
"But you know." Dad almost raises his voice a little. "That's not fine! You lost your father! That must have been really hard for you! And for your mother."
"It was."
"How old were you?"
"11 or 12."
"I am so sorry!" Dad looks at Jake with really worried and sad eyes. "You know Miller, I understand so much more!"
"Oh." Jake says quietly.
"You had to be the man in the house in such a young age and you had to take care of your baby sister. It's not a surprise that you don't enjoy school when you have so much bigger things to worry about!"
"Yeah..."
"I underestimated you Jake, and I apologize!" Dad says and Jake gives him a shy smile.
"But! I still don't fully approve you dating my daughter. She is my only child and I want the best for her, I bet you understand. You have done a lot of stuff that I don't approve and you need to show me that you are not a criminal and that you are trustworthy."
"I understand completely." Jake nods.
After saying goodbyes with Jake I walk back inside and go to the living room where dad is already reading a newspaper.
"Thank you dad, you were very kind today."
"I don't want you to date him anymore." Dad drops the bomb.
"What?" I get very confused. "But the dinner went so well."
"I tried Emily. I really tried. I understand him, and I understand why he is the way he is, but I just don't like him! And I don't like the idea that you are dating him."
"Well fuck you dad." I cry and run upstairs.
