Well, today is the reaping, specifically the 6th one I've entered in. Luckily, my younger brother, Wesley, who's only 6 right now, can't enter the reaping for another 6 years thankfully. I remember the Hunger Games the year he was born, the 34th, won Eero Nitva, who won them by using axes, knifes, and swords to kill other tributes. He's from District 7. Anyways, when I go enter the reaping for the 6th time, I go to the back with all of the other girls. Thats when the propaganda plays, which is so boring that I almost fall asleep to, and then our escort, Adiar Caesar, welcomes us for the upcoming Games. I hate that guy, he's so creepy and full of excitement that its scary. He loves the Hunger Games, a thing that I hate.
"Well, let us begin, to reap our brave tributes from District 5!," he says in a joyful voice, which seems rude for the occasion.
"Ladies first!," Adiar says. He waves his hands around a big glass dome full of the names of the future tribtues for this year. Luckily, I've never signed up for a tessera, so the chances of me being reaped are about 1 in 63,000. Yeah, I know, Im smart, being from 5. Math is my favorite subject, and next is science. I really hate social studies, since we have to learn about the Games, which is something I hate thinking about, since I lost 2 friends so far in the Games, one in the 37th Hunger Games, and another in the 35th. Both were girls. Both were my best friends at those times.
He picks up a paper, unfolds it, and reads the name out, and says out loud, "Thorburn Chelowech!" He says with a smile. It takes a second to register to what happened. I hear my little brother call out for me, but he's immediately silenced by the Peacekeepers. I slowly walk up to the stage, which takes a min, since there are so many kids and I'm at the back. I look out at the vast sea of kids staring at me, and I wish I was them. I hear Adiar then say, "And now for the boy!"
He does the same thing with the other glass dome and snatches up a name and says, "Jack Simmons!" I see a crowd of boys eyeing Jack, a jock from school that I don't care about. He runs to the stage, and shakes Adiar's hand.
Adiar then says, "Well, lets give our tributes a round of applause!" The crowd claps, and we are escorted into the justice building, the home of Mayor Smith, his wife, and his 2 children, one boy and one girl.
