(22) The Map

                           Cory's POV
        "DAWN!?" Uni suddenly screamed, making me jump. He then ran straight into one of the barely standing houses. All that was left was some support beams, and a single, burnt wall. I watched as Uni ran and crouched infront of something in the house, but I couldn't quite see what it was. That's when Tommy and Nick ran up to me, out of breath. They were staring at Uni, "What's he looking at?" Tommy asked, and I shrugged, walking towards Uni. Ashlie and Jon ran out of nowhere aswell, standing next to Tommy and Nick. I walked to Uni's side, and crouched next to him.

     My lense widened at the sight infront of me. It was a humanoid robot, almost the size of Uni. It was a dull blue, almost gray. It seemed worn out, like, REALLY worn out. Some of it's metal parts were dented or burned, and some were even melted. It had a large screen on the front of what seemed to be it's head. The screen was dusty, and the same dull gray color as it's whole body. It also wore what seemed to be headphones. They were square shaped, and had the same blueish color on the ends of them, and it had an antenna sticking out if the top of the headphones, and it had a small orb at the top. The orb was the same color as the rest of the body. I glanced back and noticed the others standing behind us, staring at the robot aswell as it leaned motionlessly against the single wall.

      I watched in slight curiosity as Uni ran his fingers across the aged robot. I could tell he was feeling for damages on it's metal surface. As he did so, he suddenly stopped on the wrist of the robot, and that's when I noticed the small metal plate that was bolted to his wrist. The plate read 'constructed by Uni Comics'. Uni built THAT!? I thought in suprise. "Please work..." I heard Uni whisper, and I watched as Uni lifted his right hand and placed it right in the center of the robot's face-like screen.

        For a few moments, nothing happened. I saw Uni droop his head a bit in disappointment, then, it happened. A loud beep emitted from the robot, and bright, blue light formed around Unis hand. The light began to slowly spread out from it's starting point, and soon enough the whole robot was bright blue. Uni slowly pulled back his hand, and white lights began to form on the robots face. A line of them seemed to mimic a straight mouth, while two smaller lines seemed to mimic closed eyes. Then, the eyes slowly opened.

         The eyes blinked open, looking around in what seemed to be suprise. Then, he looked forward, straight at Uni. He paused, as if scanning the boy.  "Master Uni...?" The robot suddenly questioned. I was suprised at how human-like the voice was. "Dawn..." Uni said quietly, he was smiling brightly, but I saw a tear run down his cheek. Uni then leaned forward quickly, hugging the robot. The robot, Dawn, seemed to pause for a moment, but then he slowly lifted his metal arms and hugged Uni back. "I thought you were destroyed!" Uni wailed. Dawn hugged the boy a bit tighter, "No, only powered down...I didn't think I would ever be powered on again, thank you..."

      The two stopped hugging for a moment, and Uni stood up, holding his hand out to the robot. Dawn stared at his hand, then reached out to grab it. Uni struggled to pull up the robot, so I reached forward and helped him pull him up. When the robot got to it's feet, it slowly moved it's seemingly stiff gears. Then Dawn looked up, his eyes met mine, and he slowly looked behind me, looking at the others. "Who are these?" Dawn asked Uni. "We're the Shred squad, who are YOU?" Tommy questioned.

      "Oh yes, where are my manners, I'm Dawnbot, but you can call me Dawn. Uni built me," He paused, looking at Uni, "He built me what seems to be many years ago." Dawn finished. "Oh, well, I'm Jon, and That's Ashlie, Nick, Tommy, and Cory!" Jon answered the bot quickly. Dawn waved slightly, "Nice to meet you all." He said, then he looked at Uni. "How long has it been?" He questioned. Uni looked down, "10 years.." He whispered. "10 years!?" Dawn exclaimed, "What hap-" but he cut himself off as he seemed to notice the town for the first time.

      He moved his head around slowly, staring in shock at the remnants of his town. He then looked at Uni, "What happened, Uni?" He questioned. Uni hung his head, "Graser came...He destroyed everything...And killed everyone..." Uni explained. Dawn looked at Uni in suprise, "Were you the only survivor?" Dawn asked, and Uni explained about how he was cursed, and how he got his blindfold. "What have you been doing since then?" Dawn asked, suprised. Then, Uni explained about him and I trying to find a place to belong, and how we came looking for this place, and how we met the others.

     Dawn listened patiently until his story was iver, then he spoke. "So, it led you here?" He questioned. Uni nodded, "Yeah, but I'm not sure why." Uni answered, "You're the only good thing here..." Uni murmured. Then Dawn seemed to get an idea, "Wait, I believe I have an idea of what you've come for." Dawn suddenly spoke. "What is it?" Uni asked curiously. Dawn looked at Uni, "Before I was shut down, You're mother programmed a chip into me, she said that when the time came, it would come to good use." Dawn explained, reaching up to press a large blue button on one of the headphones he wore.

        Dawn's faced suddenly dissapeared, and a small laser shot out of his face, it landed on the ground, and the light spread out to a square shape. It was flat, then suddenly what seemed to be landscape formed holographically on the ground. It had a dot on it that blinked slightly, and a line that stretched from the blinking dot. It stretched across the landscape until it ended at a bigger blinking dot. "It's...A map." Nick said in suprise. "Precisely. I believe this is where you must go to defeat this threat that you run from." Dawn voice said, though he still had no face. Then the holographic map closed back into a single laser and retreated back into Dawns face.

     Dawn's mouth and eyes returned, and he blinked a but, then looked back at us. Uni smiled a bit, and turned around to face all of us. "Well guys, looks like we have another adventure...If you'll join me, that is." Uni added, slightly disappointed. "What are you talking about? This is the closest thing to a family that I've had in years!" Tommy exclaimed. Nick nodded in agreement, "Yeah dude, I'll stay by your side until my last moments." He then looked at Jon and Ashlie, and they both smiled, "I'm in, we've co.e to far to tap out now." Ashlie said. "Yeah! I'm not leaving!" Jon exclaimed. Uni smiled, "Then it's settled. We'll follow the map to the new destination, then we'll battle Graser." Uni said, turning back to Dawn. "Glad you could join us, old friend." Uni said. "It's my honor." Dawn said, dipping his head. "Let's get going then."
