"Don't want to be who's friend, TT?" Cheryl asked. She had emerged through the door with a bottle of wine in her hands.
"Yours," Veronica said grinning.
"Oh the feeling is mutual sweetie," Cheryl said. "Anyway does anyone know what this is? Not you Ronnie," Veronica closed her mouth as she was about to speak.
"Um a bottle of wine?" Betty said.
"Oh dear cousin, this is a beautiful bottle of Château Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classé," Cheryl said. "In other words for you simple minded folk, a fifteen thousand dollar bottle of red wine from France."
Toni was focusing on Cheryl's lips as she talked, the way she said the name of the wine was...appetizing. Cheryl passed glasses to the girls. The others sipped on theirs but Cheryl and Toni downed their glasses like they were shots.
"Refills?" Cheryl asked. Everyone shook their heads except for Toni, who extended her glass towards the redhead. Cheryl smirked at her. "Alright now that I'm feeling loose and can stand being in the same room with you all, time for a little game."
Cheryl introduced Never Have I Ever. She didn't explain the rules given that she could tell by looking that they all had played it before. Cheryl started the game.
"Never have I ever almost killed someone," Cheryl said.
"Wow Cheryl. Intense start to the game," Josie said. No one lifted their glasses, except for Toni.
"No surprise there," Cheryl rolled her eyes.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Toni shot back. She crossed her arms, glass still in hand and gave Cheryl that 'You have 5 seconds to explain before I slap you' look.
"Well given you're the only gang member in the room, you can fill in the blank," Cheryl said taking a sip of her wine.
"Mmm, so tell me Cheryl, how's your father? Since we're on the topic of murder and all," Toni asked snidely. Josie snickered and both Veronica and Betty's mouths dropped.
Cheryl on the other hand, was left speechless and fuming. Toni felt a little bad about mentioning the late Clifford Blossom, which also involves the loss of her brother, but if she didn't stand her ground she would be walked all over.
"Okay my turn!" Veronica said. "Never have I ever kissed a girl...and your mom doesn't count."
Everyone drank some of their wine, except for Cheryl, who finished the rest of her second glass. Betty looked concerned, Josie looked annoyed, and Veronica looked impressed.
"My turn I guess. Um, Never have I ever given someone a strip tease," Toni said. Veronica and Josie finished their first glass while Cheryl was now drinking from the bottle.
"You mean to tell me Toni the Trucker hasn't given someone a strip tease?" Cheryl said slowly, the wine moving through her body.
"I don't give them, I receive them," Toni said. "This game sucks." She finished her glass and put it alongside the other girls on the chest.
Cheryl was now staring at the newcomer. She wasn't sure if it was fascination or annoyance, maybe lust even. She was attracted to Toni no doubt, the way the girl stood up to her was...alluring.
"Well if you vagrants have any other ideas, I'm all ears," Cheryl slurred before flopping down in her bed. Veronica smirked, the wheels inside her head turning with a quickness. She whispered in Betty's ear, before standing to make an announcement.
"So ladies of the night, I have an ancient tradition that may spark your interest," Veronica said with a grin on her face. "Prank calling!"
Josie groaned and Toni bursted into laughter, "Prank calling? Are we in the sixth grade?"
"C'mon guys it'll be fun, Josie back me up here," Betty encouraged. Josie rolled her eyes but agreed to join in. The girls joined Cheryl on the bed and searched their contact lists for who to call.
"I'll prank call Reggie," Cheryl said. She clicked his contact and waited for him to pick up.
"Hey Red, you finally ready to hop on this bod?" Reggie said through the phone.
"Wait how did you know it was me, you warthog?" Cheryl asked.
"Because I have caller-ID sweetness," Reggie replied. Cheryl scoffed in disgust and hung up the phone.
"You were supposed to type '*67' first, Cheryl," Veronica said. Cheryl rolled her eyes and went back to drinking from the bottle. "Does anyone have a burner phone?"
Toni finally took her gaze from Cheryl and perked up, "I do!" She pulled it from a bag and looked between the girls as they were staring at her. "Oh come on, I'm in a gang."
"We know," Cheryl mumbled between sips.
"I think you should lay off the vintage," Toni said.
Cheryl closed her eyes, her face flushed as if she was going to explode any second. "You know what I think? I think you should leave."
The girls looked surprised, except for Toni, who was eyeing the girl.
"Cheryl...," Josie started but was cut off by Cheryl's voice raising.
"No, leave. All of you. I mean what was I thinking? I could have slumber parties and we could have a pillow fight and do each other's nails? All while there's a psychopathic killer on the loose, my mother is the next Valerie Scott, and I'm this close to...," She trailed off, not finishing her last sentence. "Leave."
Cheryl then stomped into her closet and slammed the door. Josie was the first to leave, as if waiting for the moment she could be relieved of the dreadful sleepover. Veronica invited Betty to stay the night with her since it was late. Toni on the other hand, stayed right where she was.
After walking the girls downstairs to their rides, she climbed the grand steps again. She took a deep breath when she returned to Cheryl's room, the beautiful red head sitting on the floor, wine bottle nearly empty.
"I thought I told you to leave? Do your ears not work?" Cheryl slurred.
"Just stop, okay? Stop. You can quit with the insults and misguided anger," Toni said. She sat cross cross on the floor, a few feet from Cheryl to give her space.
Both the girls sat in silence for at least half an hour. Neither one knew how to break the stillness. Toni shifted around a bit, cracked her knuckles, braided her hair, and even started playing with the carpet fibers.
"Why did you stay?" Cheryl whispered.
Toni barely heard the girl from how quiet she was. This was the first time she had heard the girl been anything but confident and bitchy.
"Because you really don't want to be alone, you're just pushing everyone away," Toni said.
"So what are you a Psychologist now? Yeah well just because I'm a little off my game because of the wine doesn't mean you can unveil secrets from me or whatever," Cheryl finally stood up and left her closet.
"What's wrong with just saying what's bothering you?" Toni asked, her arms crossed over her chest.
"Do you want to know what's bothering me? You, now get in the damn bed and go to sleep, your voice is annoying," Cheryl huffed before turning on her side and shutting her eyes. She didn't turn back around either, but tried hard to silence the little gasp she emitted when she felt the bed dip from Toni's weight.
In reality, Cheryl thought Toni's voice was one of the most soothing and comforting voices she had ever heard. Words glided over her tongue slow and aiding, as if she actually cared about people, about Cheryl.
"Goodnight Cheryl," Toni said. She didn't expect a response from her, so she just closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
"Goodnight Toni."
