•Leilani's POV•

I woke up just in time to get Max from school, so I snuck out of the house and drove my car to the school to get him.

When I got there he was outside waiting patiently for me. Gosh, he is just so cute. His huge Batman backpack went to his calves because he was so short just like me and our mom.

I ran up to him and picked him up and gave a kiss on the cheek. He laughed that cute laugh that makes me smile.

Once he was buckled and situated in the car, I got in and drove back to the prison we live in. Max doesn't know that I get abused by John and his wife because I make him go up to his room and hide.

I want to do everything in my power to keep this kid safe. I love him way too much to see him get hurt or have to witness me getting beat.

Not all of the beatings are bad. But one time I remember when I was 18, John beat me with a metal baseball bat. I had bruises for weeks. He even broke my arm, but I couldn't get a cast because I didn't have enough money at the time.

We were just sitting in silence until Max broke it.

"Sissy, why do you wear that flying thing on your neck all the time?" He asked so sweet and innocently.

"I wear it so that I know that mommy is always with me wherever I go. The flying thing is an angel, mommy's angel when she went to heaven." I replied.

I always told him that our mom is always with us and I read him the bible every night before he goes to bed. It's what we do together.

John hates it though, and I know that, but I still read him the bible.

He caught one time and it was really bad. That was the day John beat me with the baseball bat.

I just realized that there was a black SUV following me.

On a whim, I did a U-turn and headed straight to Hal's Diner; where I worked.

The person kept on following me there.

I quickly got out of the car and got Max out too when we made it there and I ran inside with Max on my hip.

"Susan!" I yelled as I ran into the diner. I looked for her, but instead of her coming, the douchebag I met yesterday came up to me.

"What's wrong? I saw you run in here." He said worry laced into his voice.

"Why should I tell you?" I snapped back. I think I kind of scared Max a little, but I wasn't worried about that right now.

"Because it's my fault. I can help you!"

"How?"

"Because since you have been seen serving me, you are now in danger."

"Wow! Thanks for that." I said sarcastically.

"You're welcome. Now, will you tell me what's wrong?"

"Fine I will, but you have to do anything in your power to protect my little brother more than me. So like if it's between him and me, you will always choose him-"

"No, I will protect you both equally!" He shouted, scaring Max.

"Fine, then I won't tell you and stop shouting, you're scaring my brother."

"You will tell me," He said sternly, "and fine, whatever I will protect your brother more." He then turned to my brother. "Sorry for scaring you little one." I still didn't know his name, until I find out, he's Douchebag.

"It's okay," Max said in his sweet voice. All cute and shy.

I looked out the diner to see if the SUV was still there and it was. I need to tell Douchebag quick so the person doesn't leave.

"So I was driving back to my house when I realized that there was this black SUV following me very closely. So I made a U-turn and drove straight here and didn't expect to see you here. And as you know they followed me." He just nodded his head.

"Ok. You and your brother are coming back to my house. You will be safer there."

"No, we won't! I don't even know your name." I yelled at him.

"If I tell you my name will you come to my house then?"

"Yeah, I guess. If that will keep us safe."

"Ok good. My name is Luke White, leader of the Fire Breathing Dragons."

"Ok well, we better get going. Did you get the license plate of the car?"

"Yeah, I am way ahead of you." He said cockily.

"Well, are you sure? Cause we have to get Max's car seat out of my car."

"Ok, we need to go quickly though."

We walked to my car to get Max's car seat out. Luke ended up doing it all by himself and put it in his white Range Rover. I'm starting to feel safer already.

After the car seat was in his car, I put Max in it and buckled him up. Then I scrambled to get myself in the car and situated. Luke was already in the car waiting for me.

Once we were all ready, he started the engine and started to drive.

Will we see that SUV again?
