Wind whipped across my face as I ran, I ran and ran. I had to escape from what could possibly be my very destruction, well not physically, just mentally. Trees passed by me in blurs of brown and green, and the stars appeared to be white streaks in the sky.
You're probably wondering "What the actual fuck?" So am I. All I know is that something in this town is off, and it's not just me. There's this presence, I can feel it. Whatever this presence is has been tempting me for a good week. Which now that I think about it, a week isn't a really long time. However, of course, being mentally tormented and tortured really does seem to drag things out.
Now I should probably start from the beginning, but that's a really really long story, so I'm going to start 3/4ths in.
My name is Marjorie Hartley, which is a really odd name for the year 2018, at least I think it is. The thing is I didn't get that name in the 2000's or any time close to that. I was given that name In 1902, weird right. I was born March 6th, 1902. In 1920 my human life ended, and the life I'm damned to began. 1920 was the year I was painfully and aggressively turned into the monster I am today, a vampire. Anyways that's the beginning which I wasn't going to talk about yet, but I felt you should know some of it.
Back to the topic. I moved in with my current family officially in 2006 three years after they were married. My current "mom" is named Bethany Martin; and her husband, my "dad", is named Justin Martin. Before I moved in with them I had been staying with Bethany's parents, or my "parents" at the time, Patrick and Cheryl. And my list of "parents" goes on further back than any of them can remember.
Bethany and Justin have two actual kids named Eli and Elsie. Eli was born in 2005 and Elsie in 2001. I've been with them since they were born, and I love them with everything.
To everyone who doesn't know my secret I play the part as Bethany and Justin's adopted daughter, a part I have played many times in my existence. I used to be able to be to go by Marjorie at the beginning of my existence, but now I go by Ria because Marjorie brings up too many questions in this day and age.
Ella is another person in my family, however she's more closely related to me, meaning she is also a vampire.
I found Ella wandering in the woods three years ago, she was a newborn vampire. Poor Ella had the misfortune of being turned at the very young age of 16, of course I was young too, but Ella had so much life left for her to live.
You see, she mistakenly fell in love with one of us. She didn't know at the time of course. Who would stay with you when they knew you were a monster.
His name was Brahms. Brahms was an evil, evil man. He used his powers to manipulate Ella. Brahms made Ella believe he could give her the world. Technically, he could, but he was never going to. He just wanted one simple thing, blood.
Human blood is very tempting for vampires, but some of us are able to keep ourselves in check, most of the time at least.
Ella's blood was different, it tempted Brahms in ways he didn't know was even possible. He wanted her blood, but he didn't want to lose the scent of it. It was an odd combination. He wanted to keep her alive, but he wanted to kill her so much more.
It still amazes me how Ella turned into a vampire. Something must've been able to kill Brahms before he drained Ella dry, I just don't know what.
When I found Ella in the woods she reminded me a lot of myself when I was first turned. She was angry, confused, and lost. I remember she tried to kill me at first. She blamed me for what she had become. I was somehow able to convince her that I was on her side, and that I just wanted to help her and protect her.
I treat her like she's my daughter, it feels like my duty. Maybe it's because I could never really be there for my actual daughter, but that's a whole other story.
As I'm running I begin to hear the faint sound of footsteps a good 100 feet behind mine, and gaining very quickly.
"Ria!" I hear the clear ringing of Ella's voice sound throughout the forest. I want to stop, but I have to keep running. I can't go back, I just can't.
I try to speed up, but I'm already going as fast as I can. I hear the footsteps getting even closer. Ella has always been faster than me, so I know in a matter of seconds she's going to catch me.
"Please stop!" She pleads with me. I sense that's she's just a few feet behind me now. I try and try to go faster, but I just can't.
All of a sudden I'm knocked off of my feet, with what feels like the force of boulders. "Gotcha." Ella whispers as she has me pinned to the ground.
"Ria, why were you running?" She asks, sadness laced in her tone. "I- I can't stay here." I say as I try to get out of her firm grip. "But you can't leave me, Ria, you're all I have."
"I'm sorry Ella, it's not safe for me to be here, I'm too dangerous."
"That's a bunch of bullshit." She rolls her eyes at me. "I guess now I'll be the one convincing you to stay." Ella states, referring back to three years ago, when the roles were reversed.
"There's this presence. A presence that's been tempting me this whole week. It's torturing me Ella. Please just let me go." I plead, becoming a mess on the forest floor.
"You can fight it, Ria, I know you can." She encourages.
"I can't El, why can't you see that?" She just shakes her head at me, refusing to let me leave.
"No, I'm going to help you through this." Ella insists, "You helped me through one of the toughest times in my existence and I'm not going to let you leave me now." I could tell by the look on her face that I wasn't going anywhere.
