{Chapter 8: Calm before the storm}
"I didn't know you lived on my street." Katie stated as she and Jack walked home together side by side at the end of the day to work on their project.
"Well now you do." He smirked.
"Okay so how do you want to split up the work?"
"We can both do separate research and then swap notes next on Friday. Today's Tuesday so we've got plenty of time to research. I can do Greek mythology if you'd like." Jack offered.
"Okay. I was thinking for the presentation we can do like, a model of Vesuvius and Pompeii and a video of what it was like the day Vesuvius erupted in the background." Katie suggested.
"See, this is why you're the nerd." He chuckled.
"I'd beg to differ." Katie laughed. "I have to be honest with you, Jack. I was surprised you knew so much about Pompeii and Greece."
He shrugged. "Who wouldn't be interested in awesome volcano eruptions and mystical monsters?"
"You don't know how nerdy you sound right now." Katie laughed.
"Just like you?"
"... Whatever, Jack."
Jack laughed. "C'mon, we're here."
Katie followed Jack inside the house which was surprisingly really clean when she was surprised by the squealing of a little girl.
"Jackie~!"
Katie watched as a genuine smile formed on Jack's lips as he picked up a little girl who looked about the age of 4 with the same black hair and deep eyes as Jack.
"Hey there, Lacy! How was school and where's mom?" He asked, walking further inside the house, Katie following him.
"Good! I colored a butterfly! And mommy went to go buy food and daddy's in his office" She smiled, genuinely proud of herself. She looked over her big brother's shoulder, noticing Katie for the first time. "Jackie?" She whispered.
"Yes Lacy?" He asked, gently putting her down on the living room couch.
"Who's the girl?"
"Oh, this is my friend, Katie. We're working on big kid work for our school."
"Hi, nice to meet you Lacy! I'm Katie." Katie smiled, sitting next to the small girl.
"Hi! Do you like puppy's?" She asked as Katie felt like dying on the inside from the adorableness of the four year old's question.
"Yep. I even have a puppy at home! Maybe I can bring her over next time." Katie smiled.
Lacy's face lit up. "Jackie did you hear that?! Kitty has a puppy and she said I can play with it!" She suddenly went serious. "I like her. Bring her here more. With the puppy."
Katie laughed hearing her new nickname as Jack smiled at his little sister. "I will. Now Kitty and I have to go work now, okay? Just come get us in my room of you need anything, okay?"
"Yes, Jackie! Have fun working!"
Jack nodded before leading Katie up the stairs to his surprisingly neat bedroom. "Make yourself comfortable."
Katie took a seat on the rug next to his bed as she watched him grab his laptop from his desk. "I didn't know you had a little sister. Not to mention an adorable one."
Jack smiled at the topic of his sister as he sat down next to Katie on the ground and booted up the laptop. "Yeah, I don't really talk about her much, you know? Can't have her ruin my rep." He winked obviously just joking around.
