THE BLACK BOX.

I half expected the NAVE headquarters to be located in a serene environment, with moderate building, ever smiling staff and bla bla bla but who was I kidding... The freakingly tall building screamed one word that made my insides cringe in fear - anti-crime.

The walkway was long and my legs started to ache. It was a seven storey building that seemed to have no end, the windows were large and high but it didn't give off the interior of the building. It was painted white and reminded me of our fortress-like house...

The feeling of a hand against mine made me halt my train of thoughts.
It was Joshua, he took my hand in his. I frowned disapprovingly.

"she's far ahead, "he reminded me pointing at Mom who was ahead of us.

" so? "I asked, masking my facial expressions.

" errrm I just... You're nervous. " he replied using his other hand to scratch the back of his neck.

I let my hand relax in his. Though I wanted to snatch my hand from his, the tension inside me won't let me.

" Just don't tell them lies but be careful of what you save. Those people are bastards," he said as his fingers gingerly stroked my hand.

I nodded. "okay."

" They are seven. The five directors of the five operational branches in the NAVE, the Director General who - "

I blinked." Why do you know so much about them? "

My question cut him off guard and he released my hand abruptly. His eyes narrowed as he looked at the building we were now fast approaching and he was silent for long.
" Never mind. Pretend I didn't say a thing. "

Okay. Mr Hot Driver is really acting weird right now. I nodded and remained silent, looking forward.

Mom disappeared into the building through a medium sized glass door that automatically opened as she got there. I looked around. There was still no cruel looking guy with a gun. I expected the whole compound to be heavily guarded.

I shielded my eyes from the cruel sun and faced Joshua.
"Jo-"

"There are cameras everywhere Karl darl. They can hear and see us, " he said with a low voice.

Seriously? I nodded slowly as his musical voice warmed my heart. He called me 'Karl darl' too, perhaps it's just his way of apologizing for shunning me earlier. Despite that, I didn't miss the hint of pure emotion in his voice.

I sighed and looked around, searching carefully for hidden cameras but I found none. Joshua had to be lying.
The glass door opened as we got so close to it, leading us into a black dark room. No source of ventilation or illumination. Wait... It's a box.

The darkness was velvety. I blinked severally as my hands searched earnestly for something, anything, everything and nothing at the same time.

The air was suffocating, the darkness blinding me as moist overwhelmed my eyes. My hands clung to my throat. The lack of air was killing.

"Karleen! Karleen! "

As much as I wanted it to be F, I was grateful the voice seemed human and mortal. My body trembled in fear.

The sound of shattering glass surrounded me, still the darkness mocked me, refusing me vision.

" Karleen! "

Anywhere in the world, I'll recognize that musical voice and a feeling of relief washed through me.

I felt warm arms wrap around me and my insides finally relaxed. His hands stroked my kinky hair and my throat.

" Breathe Karl darl. Please, " the fear was evident in his voice.

I willed myself to breathe, trying to inhale the limited amount of hair in this suffocating box but my lungs failed me.

" three minutes more, we'll be out. Please," his voice was pleading.

I shook my head as fresh tears rolled down my cheeks. "where are we?"

"shit... Why can't someone come to help. Look, there's this high tech search room in the NAVE called the black box and - "

My weak voice interrupted him." where are we? Why can't I breathe? What did you do to me? " it must have taken long for me to complete my questions but he didn't reply.

I knew it. He was going to kill me. No one will never know. My insides screamed at F to say something, to tell me what was happening. But F didn't speak.

" You'll kill me. You'll kill me," I kept chanting

His grip on me was tighter. "I'm sorry, Karl. But you've left me with no choice."

I stilled, waiting for his next move. I was still waiting when I felt his mouth slam hard against mine.

Then... I breathed.
