"What next?"Josh pulled me away from the curtain and turned me to face him. "We can do this. Stay at her place till Christmas jus to relax."
I pressed my lips to a firm line. "I'm not comfortable with her, really. There's something off about her."
He rolled his eyes in frustration. "I trust Sarah with my life, Karl. She's been with me since I left home!"
"And so? People change! People change, they change. They. Change. Just like Son--ia."
He raked his hands through his short hair. "Do you trust me?"
My gaze fell to the white tiles and I blinked. "Joshua..."
Shock was boldly written on his face. He shook his head in disbelief. "After all we just shared? Wow. Wow."
I wanted so much to tell him I did trust him but I couldn't bring my lips to say those words. "You're a stranger, Joli. A familiar one, Josh."
He whistled and turned his back to me. "I thought we just talked everything out. I just told you everything and this is what I get? Not even a tiny bit of your trust?"
I took a step back. "After last night, I'm not too sure about anything anymore. We talked everything out, yeah. It doesn't take away the fact that you lied to me. It doesn't make me believe you because all you said may be lies... I'm sorry if i--"
His next action caught me by surprise. He turned to face me and cupped my face in his large hands and looked into my eyes. I looked away. "What do you want?"
I didn't even think. His soft voice was drugs. "Let's act according to your plan."

Sarah was expecting us, I could tell from the hot pasta that welcomed us on the dining. Josh must have told her to illuminate the house because it was a bit brighter than the last time.Sarah wore a black dress and smiled as widely as she could. "You all like pasta?"
Josh nodded. I mumbled a yes while Kath's gaze were fixed on her phone. I jerked her.
She had vehemently refused to stay back at home after I told her that something was off about Sarah. "Pasta is food. So, yes I love pasta."
Josh laughed. "That's the spirit of pasta."
I sat beside Josh which made Sarah directly opposite me.
Kath prayed. "Father, bless this food. Amen."
We chorused. "Amen."
Sarah spoke. "No talking on my dining, it's not allowed."
We ate silently but at intervals, I felt Sarah's gaze rest on me. I ate the food quickly and took my plate to the kitchen, refusing Sarah's approval.
I was rinsing the plate when the door opened. I looked back to see Sarah.
"Pasta is his best food."
I replied with a smile. "How did you meet him?" I dried the plate with a napkin and placed it in the plate rack.
She dropped her plate on the sink. "Like people meet. You like him, right?" Her voice was low.
"I... yes."
My hand reached for her plate but her hand stopped me. "He's not good for you. He'll never be good for you."
My eyes dilated in shock. "Why?"
She smiled, narrowing her gaze. "Because he's mine, baby girl."
The door opened and Kath walked in. She held her phone in one hand and her phone in the other. "You cooked a really delicious food, ma. You should have been a chef, not a doctor."
Sarah smiled. "People tell me that a lot. Maybe that's why I was never good with the stethoscope."
"Ouch, when did you start being a doctor?" She asked, further.
"Twenty years ago. I'm growing old, you know?"
Kath nodded. "Yes. Ser--"
I walked out of the kitchen with her words still echoing in my brain. He's hers, how?
Josh wasn't in the dining when I got there but his plate sat proudly on the table.
Guys will always be guys. I neglected the plate and turned, trying to remember which way to go. I finally went the right way and after opening two dark rooms, I met him.
"What are you doing?"
I shrugged. "What does it look like I'm doing? Are you busy?"
"Not at all. I've missed you, love. Come, baby."
I blushed. "I'm not your baby."
I sat beside him and her kissed my forehead. "Tomorrow's Christmas, right? Would you give me a gift?"
He was silent for a while. "If you want one, I will."
I yawned. "I want one. Can I sleep here?"
"You can. But what about Kath? She's too busy with her phone, though."
I lied and rested my head on his broad chest, blocking all other thoughts except one from my mind.
It wasn't so dark when I woke up. It was bright enough for me to see that some files had replaced Josh on the bed. I closed my eyes to sleep back but my curiosity didn't let me.
Seconds later, I found myself straining my eyes trying to see the content of the papers. I hated myself do much for spying on him but I couldn't help myself.
I didn't even understand what the documents were about. I searched for my phone and sent Kath a message.
Me: Are you asleep?
Kid sister: Nope. Almost Sha. Why?
Me: Where's Sarah and Josh?
Kid sister: The backyard. They're in the middle of a deep talk.
Me: Thank goodness. Please come over.
Kid Sister: Okay. You're wasting my airtime. Next time use WhatsApp o! Arghhhhh!
Me: You're a poor fine geh.She came in few minutes later in her night dress. "Babe, who's the poor fine geh??"
I laughed. "You. Come and see this thing," I stretched the papers to her.
She collected them and turned on the flashlight of her phone. She read for seconds before looking at me. "Where did you see this?"
"On the bed. Perhaps Josh was studying them while I was asleep. What?"
She sighed and blinked. "Hmm they're...ermmm sex partners."
"Who and who?"
