Chapter 36

   "Wanna go to the fair?" Ashton asks as he enters my room without even a knock. "Come in" I say sarcastically and he rolls his eyes before plopping down on the bed beside me. "Whatever, so you wanna go?" he asks again.

   "What fair are you talking about?" I ask sitting up. "The town fair, its starting around noon" he told me reaching up and twirling my hair with his finger. My stomach fluttered and I let my hair hide my blush. "Oh, cool. Sure" I replied.

  He smiled and sat up, leaning close to my face. My anxiety picks up as I think he's going to kiss me but he passes my lips and leans to my ears. I subtly let out the breath I was holding as he speaks. "I've got a surprise for you Burke. Wear something warm" he says and smiles at me before he gets up and leaves my room.

   What does he have in mind?

     After getting dressed I head downstairs and see Ash already dressed sitting in the kitchen. "Ready to go?" he asked. "Yup" I answered, popping the p.

   I tied my sweater around my waist and exited the house with him following behind me. I had on a black skinny jeans with a purple camisole and my black sweater tied around my waist.

   After a 15 minute drive we pulled into a parking lot and the smell of cotton candy and popcorn filled the air around us.

    "Hey, where's Lilly?" I asked as well exit the car and made our way to the entrance. The guy at the gate put hand bands on our wrists and we entered.

   "She's at a friend's house" he answered nonchalantly. I nodded my head and looked around. There were game booths as far as the eye could see. Children of all ages ran around, adults lounged about and teens as well.

  "So, what you wanna do first?" he asked. "I don't know" I said, struggling my shoulders. "Let's go get some cotton candy" he suggested and I nodded to this. "I want the blue one" I told the girl and she smiled at me before proceeding to make my candy.

   Ashton paid for the candy and as we walked away, the dunk tank caught my eyes. "Hey Ashton, I bet you I can dunk you" I said to him with a smirk.

    "Oh really" he chuckled and I laughed before running over to the dunk tank. There wasn't any line there so I ran up to the man controlling the stand and asked for him to set it up for me.

   Ashton sat on the seat and I smiled evilly at him. After paying the man he handed me three balls. I threw the first one, missing on purpose. Ashton laughed at me and began to give me trash talk. "That the best you can do Burke? My grandma could throw better than you" he shouted and laughed again.

   I smirked at this and threw the second one, missing again. Purposefully though, I didn't let anyone notice this. "Common Pumpkin, give it your beat shot" he said and did a fake yawn as if he was bored.

   I threw the final one and missed again. He laughed at me and I just smiled back at him. I gave the man another dollar and he gave me another set of balls.
 
    On the first throw I hit the circle right in the center. Ashton's eyes widened as he fell into the tank resulting in me bellowing with laughter.

   "Not nice Burke" he frowned and sat down again. "I'm sorry, is Ashy Poo angry?" I teased. "Ha ha very funny" he said and folded his arms. I threw the second ball and it hit the target again, resulting in another splash. This was fun.

   The man tried to hide his laughter and I smiled at him. Ashton spluttered as he resurfaced, glaring at me. I threw the final ball and got the same results. The man helped Ashton out of the tank as I doubled over in laughter. He handed him a towel and high fived me afterwards.

   "That wasn't nice. You tricked me" he said while drying his hair and we walked away. "It's not my fault you got over confident when I missed the first time. On purpose I might add" I said and smiled at him.

   "You know what, congratulations Miranda. I think you deserve a hug" and as he moved closer to me, my eyes widened. I ran and he followed closely behind. People moved out of our way, not even bothered by us running around.

    After he caught up to me he enveloped me into a bear hug, resulting in all my chest being soaked.

    The rest of the evening was spent with us driving bumper cars, playing games and walking around, enjoying the atmosphere.

   At about 6:00 pm Ashton excused himself to talk on his phone. "Come with me" he said to me as he got back.

    I followed him to a dock, where there were small boats tied to it. A boy I recognized from school but didn't know his name, stood at the dock smiling at us. "Hi" I said to him and he replied with a hey.

   Ashton gestured for me to step into a boat and I did. He spoke to the boy and then came in afterwards. The boy released the boat from the dock and Ashton started the boat's engine and went out into the middle of the lake.

   He cut the power and turned to me, smiling. I smiled at him and he came closer and held my hand. He lay flat on the boat's bottom and I did the same. The sun was just beginning to set.

    He got out his phone and sent a text and placed ot back into his pocket. "I have something to ask you" he said to me. My heart started to beat rapidly and I swallowed hard. "Hmm, ok" I said to him.

   I lay there waiting for him to speak but he said nothing. "Ashton?" I said, expecting him to ask me what he wanted to ask me. He smiled at me and poitned to the sky.

   When I looked up I was confused, but my confusion didn't last long. A couple seconds after, light filled the sky. Fireworks burst and the words 'Be Mine?' lit the evening sky in bright red colours.

     My breath caught in my throat as I looked over to him. He held a ring between his fingers and my eyes widened. "Don't worry, I'm not proposing but I would like you to be my girlfriend?" he asked, chuckling nervously. I nodded at him with tears in my eyes.

   Why am I so emotional? "Thank you, you won't regret this. I got you this promise ring the other day, and was waiting for the perfect moment to ask. I didn't know what you would think but -" he said but I cut his rambling by placing my lips on his.

   After the short kiss I smiled at him and he did too. We hugged and lay there in the boat enjoying each others presence and the calming environment.

   I have a boyfriend. Ashton is my boyfriend!!! I couldn't be happier.
