The thought of Peter being with another girl was absolutely tearing me apart.

I tried to be happy for him as he sought after Liz, but night after night my mind would conjure up scenarios with he and I at the center of them, and I was back to square one.

And, of course, I'm not only Peter's best friend, but a good friend of Liz's, so I have to be supportive when I'd rather be crying.

And, of course, in the middle of my pity party, Peter decided to text me.

Conversation with: Peter ;P

Peter: hey, what's a good gift to get a girl?

Me: Depends.

P: on?

M: Which girl you're buying for, what the occasion is, what her personality is like, what kind of things she enjoys. There's a lot of variables in general.

P: Hm. Okay, let's start with what girl I'm buying for

M: k

P: ...

P: a 'K' is never a good sign

M: Well you said 'let's start' and then didn't start. Doesn't really matter though, I know it's liz.

P: So help me, I have no idea where to start

M: Aren't you missing a few words there Peter?

P: please

I paused, taking a deep breath. As his best friend, I should be hardcore wing-woman-ing for him to help him woo Liz so she can fall into his arms just like he wants. However, my feelings have other things to say. I'm stuck in a mental block for a minute, and Peter seemed to notice.

P: (Y/N)? Are you still there?

M: Yeah, of course.

M: Just thinking

P: about?

M: You asked me a question. I'm thinking about the answer

My phone let me know he was typing, but the notification disappeared after a moment. My own thumbs hovered over the keyboard, unsure of themselves. I let them do their thing.

M: Peter, you know how Liz is. She's not really one for gifts to begin with, if you ask me (but no one did), so here's what I'll say; show her how much you like her with your actions instead of with trivial objects. It sounds cliché but girls are able to better tune into things in general if you show us in a way that will leave a lasting impression on us. Show her your intentions with actions instead of stuff. 'Stuff' just piles up after awhile and makes your physical space too tight and filled with junk, but luckily, people's brains have endless storage. Make her remember you

After I typed out that essay and sent it, my heart dropped. Not because I thought I gave bad advice, but because I realized that I had so easily given Peter the answer to me. I was pretty certain that similar ideas would ring with Liz, too, so I don't have a doubt that it'll turn out badly. The problem is that I just handed Peter the metaphorical key to my heart and he's about to melt it down and re-purpose it for something else.

The notification popped up again letting me know that Peter was typing again. It bobbed up and down in the corner of my screen for a full two minutes before Peter sent something.

P: wow

M: What?

P: I just wasn't expecting that I guess
