"I'm walking on sunshine..." Tony sang under his breath, walking beside me down the hallway. I giggled as he let out an impatient sigh.
"I can't believe you got that stuck in my head," He complained, and I just smiled at him.
"I'm walking on sunshine," I started to sing, but then corrected myself.
"Well, I'm rolling on sunshine," I joked as I rolled my wheelchair along, "And that's okay! Rolling instead of walking works, too."
"I will never understand how you can sing about that and be so happy." Tony said from beside me. I turned to smile up at him, watching him closely as he kept pace with me.
"It's because I hated myself for so long after I got injured. So I'm making up for it now." We walked and wheeled into his lab, and the harness attached to the ceiling came over to me. I strapped it on, calling out a pleasant thank-you to Jarvis. When I had first been confined to the wheelchair, it sucked. Really sucked. But my one of my biggest complaints was that I could no longer follow my lovely boyfriend around in his lab anymore. So(perks of dating a genius), Tony built me a harness system that carried me around the room and gave me autonomous freedom to move about as I pleased.
"Plus," I continued, "I get to fly around in here, and you don't because your legs work. I mean, the reasoning behind it isn't great, but the flying part is pretty rad." Tony nodded after a moment.
"This is true," He admitted. "You get to be Supergirl for a while." I scoffed, turning upside down in the harness and lowering myself down to meet his eyes.
"Excuse you," I retorted, "I wanted to be Wonder Woman." He laughed and leaned forward to peck my lips, and I returned the chaste kiss with a smile as I righted myself and went sailing off along the ceiling again.
"Alright, well then you're my super girl." He split the name in two, enunciating each word clearly to change the meaning. I hummed, still moving in the harness.
"I suppose," I said, coming to a stop and pretending to think hard about it, "That that's fine." Tony rolled his eyes, but I could tell he was charmed.
"Yeah? Well I'm glad that works for you, my super girl." He chuckled, shaking his head as he sat down at a work station. Pulling up what (to me)looked like blue holographic nonsense, he sat back and stared at the things in front of him.
"What's that?" I asked, moving the harness over to Tony and dropping myself down to his height.
"Just doing some refinements for the Iron Man suit," He mumbled, and I could tell he was already lost in a world of math and robotics and things I could never understand. But I loved him for this exact reason, among many others- he was so passionate, and he adored what he did for a living. He really cared about the suits and the robotics and all of it. He wasn't just happy with one suit when he got it to function; he was proud of the accomplishment, but he worked to make it better and improve it constantly.
Even beyond that, I simply adored watching him work. He gets so laser-focused when he starts doing the math and mock-up drawings for suit redesigns or new features. He always, always has a coffee cup- filled with water, oddly enough- by his desk, and sometimes he'll just hold it as he works. He'll take a sip from it if he remembers, but there have been times when he's held onto the cup for an hour, just staring at his plans and analyzing them in his mind.
I knew I wouldn't get to talk to him for a while- I didn't want to distract him, anyway, because he might forget an idea before he can write it down. So, as quietly as I could, I maneuvered the harness back over to my wheelchair by the door. I safely lowered myself inside, adjusting my position to get comfortable in it. Fondly, I cast a glance at Tony. As if he knew I was looking, he looked up from his work and caught my eye.
"Heading out, babe?" He asked, and I nodded. "Alright, I'll see you around. Love you, I won't be long." I smiled, knowing that 'not taking long' could turn into him burning the midnight candle if he got into a new idea.
"Love you too, Tony." I blew him a kiss, and he pretended to catch it and slapped it on his cheek. I giggled, rolling my eyes as I turned and left the room.
