Author's POV

"Jane?" The teen heard her name being called and looked up to see her foster mother looking at her. The sweet smile on the woman's face was enough to make Jane's heart melt.

"Yes, Ms Green?" Jane obediently answered and put her paintbrush down. The bedroom the couple had designed for her was perfect - better than anything she's ever had.

"What did I say about calling me Ms Green, love? It's Carrie...or Mum - whichever you prefer." Carrie said and stroked Jane's cheek. Oh, how she loved that child. Jane was only seven but was clever enough to know that she couldn't mess this one up. The Green's are a special family - they're Jane's family.

"Dinner is ready, my love," Carrie said and held Jane's hand to pull her downstairs. When they got to the small dining room, Sam was waiting for them.

"Hey, kiddo." He smiled down at Jane as he ruffled her hair a bit "You hungry?" He asked and saw Jane nod. He directed the child to her spot at the table and sat down next to her.

"Mum, am I going to school tomorrow?" The little girl asked Carrie and looked at her Mum with her big blue eyes. The mother told Jane all about how her first day of school will be fun and exciting. Little did Jane know, that was the last time she would sit with Carrie and Sam for dinner.

"Jane?" Cheryl burst Jane's little bubble and saw the teen was zoned out. Jane was sat in the driveway, drawing away on the pavement with some chalk she found in the garage.

Cheryl remembers buying the chalk for her nieces and nephews when they come to stay. When she looked over Jane's shoulder and saw the art, she couldn't help but smile. With Jane's beautiful words in the art, it was impossible to keep a frown.

"Need some help?" Cheryl asked and sat next to Jane. The teen smiled and nodded as she watched Cheryl pick up a piece of chalk.

"I bought the chalk for me nieces and nephews. None of them ever drew anything like that though." Cheryl giggled and began drawing something of her own. Jane picked up a piece of chalk and started a new drawing as well.

"When will I ever meet them?" The teen asked, not thinking Cheryl would be shocked at the question.

"Whenever you're ready, babe," Cheryl said and smiled at her daughter. Jane was still stuck in her thoughts and couldn't seem to peel herself away.

"Hey," Cheryl gathered the teen's attention and grabbed her hand "What are you thinking about?" The mother wondered and smiled to warm Jane's heart. Cheryl and Kimberley want to start having Jane speak what's on her mind always.

"Just one of my old foster families," Jane said, not wanting to sugar coat it or lie about what she's thinking of.

"Was it a bad experience?" Cheryl cautiously asked.
