I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of scared shouts. I quickly went into the living room to see if Sarah was ok and she was tossing and rolling around the couch. Her eyes were closed but she was crying and shouting.
"Sarah, wake up babe, your having a nightmare." I said. I shook her gently to wake her. Her eyes opened with a start.
"Oh, it was all a dream." she said. She was crying like I'd never seen before, a continuous flow of sobs. I put my arm around her and she buried her face in my chest.
"It's ok baby, it's just a nightmare." I said soothingly. She stopped crying and I thought she was asleep until she looked up at me. She wiped her eyes with her hand and coughed.
"What time is it?" she asked. I looked at the silver clock on the wall.
"It's 3:30 in the morning." I said. She got up.
"I wanna show you something." she said. "So let me get dressed and I'll show you." she had left her wet clothes hanging in the bathroom to dry.
"Ok." I said. I wondered what could be so important that she had to show me at 3:30 in the morning. She was changed quite quickly and she had pulled her hair up into a messy ponytail.
"It's only like a 2 minute walk." she said. I locked the door behind me as she pulled me out the door.
The stars were out as she held my hand and we walked across the moonlit street.
"It's left here and then the alley looks like a dead end but it isn't, it leads to where we're going." she said.
"I put my trust in you and your sense of direction." I said. She laughed.
The alleyway was dark and you could hear the sound of things moving around you. I ignored it. At the end of the alley there was a fence with a person sized gap in between two planks of wood.
"Here we are." said Sarah, holding her breath to fit through the gap. I did the same. Through the gap there was a field made entirely out of long grass. It looked wild and unkempt.
"Ta da!" she said, smiling. She walked into the waist height grass and lay down. As confused as I was, I lay beside her and took her hand.
"What was your nightmare about?" I asked her. She shook her head.
"It's a stupid recurring dream about a guy chasing me and then..." she tailed off.
"It's only a dream." I said and she nodded.
"Yeah, only a dream." she looked up at the stars. "The sky is so pretty at night." she said.
"I'd probably call this morning but you know." I said. She made a face.
"If it's dark, then it's night." she tilted her face towards the moon, the light making her skin eerily pale and bringing out her sharp features. I pressed my warm lips against her cold ones, and felt the electricity flow through me. She broke off.
"Your so beautiful." I said. She smiled, but not at me.
"Thanks." she said.
"When you said you'd never been in love I couldn't believe it." I said. She blushed.
"Well I have been in love once." she said.
"With who?" I asked. She ducked her head.
"With you." she said quietly. "I am in love with you. And it's stupid and it's too quick and love is nothing and everything and..." I interrupted her by kissing her. I kissed her hard and passionately, my tongue slid into her mouth and my hands pressed into her back. She pulled off after a minute or so.
"I'm so glad you said that." I said. "I love you too. I think I always did." she smiled.
"Thank you so much." she said.
We stayed in this long grass until the sun rose and the busy sound of commuters bustling around us became clear.
"Hey Bradley?" asked Sarah.
"Yeah," I answered.
"Where do we stand?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked. "We're boyfriend and girlfriend right?" she nodded.
"That's what I thought but I just wanted to check." she said.
"It's ok." I said. "Do you need a lift home?" she shook her head.
"If you have to go I'm gonna stay here for a bit." she said. I kissed her goodbye and left my beautiful girlfriend laying in the long grass.
