Nothing could prepare me for Lina's story and much less the outcome of a life that was completely lived while still preserving the lights.
"I will tell no one", she whispered to me, as she picked up my dishes and quickly waved me goodbye.
Why had she shooed me away? I wondered to myself, but I was too afraid.
I began to understand that being able to see these lights would draw danger into my life, but why? Wasn't this a good thing to be able to see the lights and to be able to have mine seen?
I looked for the nearest phone and called my mom. Before I could hang up, she appeared behind me, as if she knew there was something wrong but in a scary way.
"Autumn, when did you start seeing the lights?" she asked with a shaky voice filled with terror.
"A year ago, mom" I replied.
"How...why....howhy?" she said as she struggled to get the words out of her mouth.
"But, mom. I'm just a kid. Why is this happening? What did I do?" I asked her.
"What's your light?" she asked hurriedly.
"I don't know, mom." I responded.
"What is it? Tell me." she quickly asked.
"I don't know, mom. I don't know." I answered with tears filling my eyes.
"Who knows?" she asked.
I sat in silence refusing to say a word because I didn't even know that she knew about the lights. I thought it wasn't even real. I thought it was a game or my imagination, but no it wasn't. It was real, and not just to me, but now, it was real to my mom.
"Destiny" I heard her mutter under a whisper.
"How do you know?" I asked her.
"I see it, honey" and as soon as she said it, I saw the glow in her eyes.
I was shaking, and my mom held my hand. She squeezed it tightly and said everything would be okay, and then she told me everything.
"Why does Destiny see the light, but no one else our age sees it?"
My mom replied, " Because, my dear. Destiny is..."
My mom didn't have time to answer the question when we were suddenly hit.
It all went dark. I fought hard to stay awake, but I couldn't.
Then, I saw him. Karma's brother standing over us, and his hands began to glow.
"Elijah" I said, but then I was out again.
Next thing I know, we were rushed into the hospital, and Elijah was there.
I awoke in a hospital bed next to my mom who was also in a hospital bed, and Elijah was sitting beside us.
"What happened?" I managed to ask once I pushed back my fears.
Elijah went on to explain that they know and that they were looking for me. He told me that Destiny and her mom are safe and that my mom will be fine.
He asked me what I remembered, but there wasn't much I could tell him other than I saw a car aggressively driving toward us and then next thing I know, I saw him glowing.
I couldn't take it all any longer, and I began to cry. Tears were pouring down my face, and suddenly I heard a whisper on the other side of the room. It was my mom who had awakened from her sleep.
"Mom?" I asked with a little drop of hope in my voice.
"Honey, are you okay?" she replied.
"Yes, I am fine, but how are you?" I answered back.
"Fine, honey. I'm fine. Elijah is a healer." She answered
"What do you mean? A healer?" I responded.
He's a doctor, but he has the gift of healing with his hands.
He extended his hand out, and he asked me if I would like to take it.
I did, and suddenly a calm took over me, as I felt that the fear and the pain went all away in that instant.
"How do you feel?" he asked.
"I feel better because I am not worried about my mom anymore. I've accepted that she is going to be fine, and that there is someone following us." I answered.
"It will be okay. We will figure it out." He responded.
I really wanted to be angry at this man who took my mom out on a date, but I couldn't be because he....saved ....my....life.
"Thank you." I said as I shook his hand.
We parted ways once the hospital released my mom and I, but we were both shaken up about the entire situation.
"Now what?" I asked my mom.
"We have to pick up your brother, and then we will figure all of this out." She said.
Once we got home, the phone rang immediately, and my mom answered. It was Karma, and she wanted to tell my mom where she was with Destiny, but next thing I know, I look out and see Destiny hanging out the window of some car I've never seen before.
My brother, mom, and I all jumped in and talked along the way.
I was scared because that was it. There was no going back. What happened to Lina was now happening to me for some reason, but I wish I knew why.
"Destiny, can I ask you a question?" I nervously asked.
"Yes, please, ask away. I know you have a ton so we might as well start now." she said.
"What's going on? Why are we being followed?" I asked.
"The lights, hun. The lights." She said.
I wondered whether this was supposed to make any sense to me, but it didn't.
Karma interrupted and said that the light in me had the power to wipe out all of the darkness. I thought to myself what is my light, and how can it do anything to anything. I never felt special or powerful, but this lady was now telling me that I was both. With my power, there could possibly be a day when there would no longer be this evil, and everything would be restored to how it once was where respect and love went hand in hand and the lights were preserved by our parents: the light protectors.
The monsters that live among us, making evil normal to continue with their evil ways, would be sent off to the underworld where they belong. Children would no longer be harmed, but rather, their goals and dreams would be realized.
They would be protected from the evil that lurked in secret. The bullies, the abusers, the evil beings who felt that they could continue the destructive cycle to destroy humanity, not respect and preserve it. They would crush dreams, hurt their kin, and make others feel worthless. They were the Minos.
Evil lies in the ones who feel that they have the right to make good people feel worthless or violate their boundaries. Good will always win in the end because the lights will always be on our side to protect us and give us strength to continue on.
We needed to leave because there was something following us, and it knew where we lived, and it wanted to make sure it changed that. The lights were a big burden to take on because they came along with the danger of the Minos and any other evil that took interest in the lights. I wondered if it was worth it, but I knew in my heart that it was.
My mom would do anything to protect my brother and I, so she made sure that she took us to live away from the place we had called home for the longest period yet: 2 years. It wasn't very hard because, after dad died, we moved from one house to the next in search of a place to call home.
I wondered where we would end up this time, but I really didn't care as long as I had my mom and brother by my side. I just wanted to settle in one place for a year or two so that I can at least make a few friends, but that choice was out of my hands after discovering that there was something out there that wanted to destroy me because I had found out about the lights.
