Ok so I lied a little. I was missing an entire section out of my book, so I have added in the missing parts between Chapters 5 and 6.
My alarm went off, and I quickly ran down the stairs into the maze that was Elijah's downtown penthouse. It was a gift from a person whose life he had saved when he was a young high school graduate, and it had been protected by a quartz stone the patient left to protect it. The penthouse looked out to Lake Michigan, and in the Spring, the colors in the landscape were reflected on the cold waters alongside Lakeshore Drive.
I had to learn to no longer respond to Autumn, and I insisted on having a name that was a lot like the season that changed our lives forever: Spring.
The phone rang, and I jumped up to answer it.
It was a voice that sounded like it had just broken away from puberty.
"Anthony? Is it really you?" I asked with the biggest smile on my face.
"Yes." He responded as my heart sank to my stomach upon hearing his voice.
It felt like it had been years since I had seen him, but he wanted to let me know that he moved into town, and that he would be seeing me at school later in the morning.
I jumped up and got ready. I tried to look my best, and I grabbed one of Destiny's pretty dresses that she only wore for special occasions. What better way to stand out at a reunion with an old friend than to wear a special, fancy dress.
I also looked through my mom's stuff, and I found some make-up. I quickly brushed on some mascara, put on light lipstick, and finished off with some blush on my cheeks. I pulled my curls back with my red ribbon, and I walked out the door.
As I waited for the bus, Destiny was making her way out of the building.
"Spring" she called out to me.
She said my name a few more times, but it sounded so unfamiliar when I heard her voice calling me that.
"Spring!" she called again.
I looked up, and she said, "You look great!"
As the bus pulled around the corner, I saw him. It was Anthony. He looked different, like mature, but cute mature. I wondered how he turned into that, but before long, I'd have the opportunity to ask the former ugly duck himself. Unfortunately, as I waited for the bus to near, a car stopped in front of Destiny and me, and the people in the car started yelling things that were difficult to understand but then guy yelled out "Go back to where you came from" as he threw his drink at me.
I wondered what he meant by "where I came from". I'm from Chicago.
The bus slowly pulled up to us, and I heard the brakes engage and then the sound of the doors opening before me.
Anthony must have missed what had just occurred a few moments before, but I could see that Destiny was very bothered by the incident. As I walked through the rows, I became all too aware of what that guy in the car might have meant when he said to go back to where I came from. I didn't quite fit in with the other kids, and he just felt the need to remind me of that, just as Anthony's mom had to also remind me.
I tried to brush it off, but I couldn't. As I got closer to Anthony, I saw that he made space next to him when he saw me coming towards him, and I just looked at this girl next to him, wondering who she was.
"Hey, this is my stepsister, Alix" he said.
"Why don't you live with her? And why haven't I seen her at your house?" I asked.
