This story was inspired by the friendship between my close friend, Shannon, and I. She was the light for me when I was in a place that was filled with darkness. I loved that she was like me, filled with so much love for life. When I met her, I just felt that she was the light. I don't know how to explain it, but I noticed how she touched the lives of all of those who were around her. Shannon specifically inspired Destiny's character.
My main character, Autumn, is inspired by my dear dear friend Devonice, as we have learned to live and suffer and keep going through this craziness called life. We helped each other adapt to WA; I love living here, but it's given me a myriad of experiences that I am still trying to make sense of.
Autumn experiences many things that Devonice experienced in her childhood or her challenging teenage years, but she also experiences what I experienced when I fell in love with someone who rejected me because I was not like him: I was not white. He felt the need to let me know that nothing would ever happen between us in the most crass way, as he took me to his very segregated town to just tell me "You see this here. We don't mix." At first, I didn't see what he was trying to tell me because it just didn't register for me: how could someone my age be so close minded when it came to love? I fell in love with minds, but he felt that my ethnicity was the deal breaker for us. He made it a point to show me and make me aware of the different races or ethnicities and how they were all separated in his town. I had wasted 3 years talking to him, at this point, and I went on to waste 4 more because he didn't let me just live my life in peace, as he knew just how to pull the strings of my heart to keep me there, waiting for nothing to ever happen.
