I decided to change up my story a bit. I have made Autumn black, and the experiences she goes through are based on my own experiences with the real life "Anthony". I wanted to recreate the feelings I felt when "Anthony" made it very clear to me that people in Wisconsin, where he is from, do not mix. It was a very uncomfortable situation for me, when I experienced this in real life, because we were just riding around in his car having a good time, but he felt the need to tell me that people of different races and ethnicities don't mix, and he justified it by showing me three different streets in Milwaukee which were indeed segregated. There definitely were clubs with just white people, or black people, or latinos in the lines outside of them. I found this to be extremely bizarre, as I am from Los Angeles, and I didn't really see that when I went out for a night on the town. Mind you, this is like 2008 or 2009 when I saw this, and I was in a way very hurt because he was telling me that nothing would come of us either. I honestly never connected with anyone the way I connected with Mike ,aka Anthony, but because I was Latina(a person of color), nothing could ever happen between us.  We would be on the phone for hours, and when we hung out, we just laughed the whole time or talked about really personal things. The intimacy factor between us was insane, but I gave up him after 7 years of wasting my life on him. I couldn't be with him, not because of a number of factors why people aren't together, I couldn't be with him because of something I had no control whatsoever over, being Latina.

I'm married now, and I have 3 kids, but I wonder about what could have been sometimes had I been white, but I don't dwell on it too much because I have a great life, not perfect by any means, and my husband of 5 years and I don't have the same mental connection I had with Mike because my husband is not much of a conversationalist, but he loves me and I love him, and the fact that I am Latina doesn't matter to my husband because love is love.

Autumn's experiences are also inspired by my dear friend Devonice @DevoniceRenee (Please check out her work on Wattpad). I want Autumn to bring to light the issues that POC face in the US  today. We follow our dreams and our hearts, but we are met, many times, with closed doors and for no other reason than the fact that we are people of a different race or ethnicity; we are minorities. This reality is our own, and things go great for a short while, but then we are always reminded that we are different.
