AVONLEA, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
December 4th, 1878
"Ruby will temporarily stay at the Cuthbert's until the Gillis' home concludes its rebuilding."
The piercing wails of Ruby Gillis sounded, causing Riley Carter to scrunch up her nose at the slightest whilst the fluorescent light of the warm painted hues radiated against her eyes as she squinted against the reflection of the sun, rising up against a marigold sky.
"You can't make me stay there, let me stay with Diana please, or God forbid, even with Riley. I'm sure the Brooks' house would be more suitable than the Cuthbert's." Ruby mewled, sobbing against her own chest sporadically, hands clutching her blush pink puffed sleeves.
A hushed snort exhaled out of Gilbert Blythe's mouth, despite his attempts to suppress his laughter and taunts arising from the tenuous insult the young Gillis girl directed towards the brunette that stood beside him.
"Stop laughing." Unfolding her crossed arms to blithely allow her fist to collide with the side of his arm, Riley's eyes narrowed towards the boy as she felt the corners of her lips twitch at his responsive groan. Clenching his jaw, Gilbert willfully nudged the girl with strength, a gasp escaping her wintry, blue-toned lips as her body twirled from impact, feebly attempting to clutch his red pleated coat, however faltering her grip. Shutting her eyes, preparing herself for pure ignominy amongst the entirety of the town, a sturdy grasp was felt on her upper arm, nonchalantly peering her eyes open, she was met with the complacent face of Gilbert Blythe, his lips curled, portraying an innocent facade, though the smug expression was transparent to her. The way his eyes bored up and down her scarlet flushed face, lashes fluttering, lips thin and upturned. The exact countenance she grew all too familiar with.
"We'd be more than glad to take Ruby in if that is most suitable. It would be good for the children to make acquaintances with each other." Mary-Anne proffered towards Mr and Mrs Gillis, comforting a distraught Ruby, catching Riley and Gilbert's full attention.
"Then I suppose it's settled. Ruby, you will stay with the Brooks and the Carter children as of today, be sure to thank them and be respectful dear." Mumbling a quivered thank you, Ruby could barely exhale a word as tears down her rosy cheeks.
